Bennett 1 suppose it's good to see ourselves as others see us, though at times it can be a bit hard on the ego. A case in point is one of the best selling novels of the day, Advise and Consent," by Allen Drury. A preview of the movie, made from the book, was presented recently at a private showing for members of the Senate, the Cabinet and other friends of the producer. It was a gala occasion. The theatre party was to be followed by a supper and dance at the Sheraton-ParHotel. As guests arrived, dressed in their best, the usual array of cameramen were to be found begging for "just one more." Inside the lobby, the Senate pages were lined up on either side, passing out colorful orange k programs. The picture was shot in Washington. The scenes, particularly those around the Capitol, were viewed with great delight. A short scene showing Senator Henry Jackson of Washington State and his charming fiancee (now wife) received thunderous applause. The photography and the acting were magnificent. The story is something else again. No novel written by an outsider has been able to catch the true spirit of the Mormon Pioneers. Though James Micheners Hawaii" has been widely acclaimed by the general public, it is not liked by the Hawaiian people. So with "Advise and Consent." No matter what the reaction of the general public may be, it did not meet with favor from the Senators. They felt that it gave a wrong impression of the legislative process and the seriousness of the work in which they are engaged. Though in any large body, there are bound to be a few obnoxious characters, the Senate as a whole is made up of dedicated men and women trying desperately to do a difficult and exacting job to the best of their ability. They may differ politically, and engage in heated debate, but each is striving to do his best according to his lights. Hence, perhaps they may be pardoned for feeling that Advise and Consent" is greatly overdrawn and does not give a true pic- ture of the legislative process.
