Show Tooele, Utah Friday, December 23, 1960 Volume Sixty Six Number Twenty Eight Merchants Sav Kiss From England Yule tide Customs From Everywhere Christmas this year, despite those troublous spirits that seem to mock its message of peace and goodwill, will be celebrated by men throughout the world, each tn his own way, each according to his own wondeiful customs. Dear to the hearts of sixty generations of people of all. races and ages, Christmas, after nearly 2,000 years, shows no sign of decrepitude Its traditions remain ever fresh, ever magnificent. In Old England, where the mistletoe was first revered and the invitation to exchange oscillatory greetings beneath it was originated, customs of the Yule feast are especially rich. This Christmas, at Queen's College, Oxford, as for years past, the wild boar's head, apple in mouth and bedecked with bayleaves and rosemary, will be ceremoniously borne to the banquet boards as a prelude to a sumptuous dinner. As the celebrants consume plum pudding and rfiince pie and drain the fragrant wassail bowl, the Yule log will burn again, its remains to be kept for next years kindling as a talisman against the ravages of fire. The Scots, the Welsh, the Irish each people boasts its own! In on Christmas eve, youngsters arrange! Then! they set out their wooden sabots or shoes for le petit Noel who will fill them before dawn with nuts, sweets and perhaps toys. Portuguese sprinkle crumbs on the hearth for hungry ghosts who visit their former houses this season. Swiss children look for Christkindli, the Christ Child, who travels m a beautiful sleigh drawn by six reindeer. The Swiss honor St. Nicholas, the 4th century prototype of Santa Claua, on December 6. No people are prouder of preserving the old traditions than the Germans, who resent modern innovations. Despite fire hazards, lighted candles are still hung on Christmas trees and the Advent Kranz (wreath) placed m windows. On Christmas eve, the Christmas candle is set in the center of the Kranz, while carolers sing Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht. Scandinavians are renowned for their Christmas customs, too. In Denmark, means double rations for all farm animals. In Sweden, the Yuletide lasts a month, starting December 13, the Feast of St. Lucia. On that day, the prettiest daughter becomes Lucia. Wearing a crown of leaves and candles, she tiptoes to the bedside of each family member, leaves cake and coffee, and silently departs with a smile and a blown kiss. , . In some countries, children expect gifts on Epiphany, January 6, which commemorates the Three Wise Men who brought gold, frankincense and myrhh to the manger. Unhappily for parents, Latin American children combine old country customs with new and expect gifts on both December 25 and January 6. the pinata. The pinata Mexicans have a custom all their own is a clay bowl colorfully decorated with tissue and tinsel and shaped like a lamb, chicken, bird or burro. Crammed with peanuts, fruits and candies, it is suspended from the ceiling on a pulley. Children are blindfolded , spun around, then given turns swinging at the pinata with a broomstick until someone hits it and the goodies come showering down. Wherever Christmas is truly celebrated this year, it will be a and for time for feasting, for gifts, for family and children prayer, because men of all creeds recognize Christmas as a symbol of hope in a woild desperate for the peace of the Christ Child. As those in other lands mark the season well, perhaps we ourselves should take to heart what Dickens wrote of Scrooge reborn: It was always said of him, that he knew how to keep Christmas well . . . May that be tiuly said of all of us.! C.I P.
