One of the biggest drawbacks in the field of traffic safety is public indifference to the enforce ment of existing traffic laws and the need for stricter regulations It is not uncommon for a polue officer to be berated for making a traffic arrest when no accident has occurred A departure from this lock the door after the horse has been stolen attitude is less drivers not involved in accidents frequently get off" with little mote than a slap on the wrist, but those who have killed through their criminal deeds often receive minor punishment In a Midwestern State, a drunken driver who killed seven persons, in effect, was sentenced to but one vear in puson for each life taken This man reportedly had been arrested on 22 prior traffic violations. A similar situation was recorded in a Western State where a drunken dnver, speeding along a superhighway, crossed into the wrong land. His car smashed into two others, killing a college student and an entne family of five Brought to trial on six counts of felony manslaughter, the jury reduced the charges to manslaught er misdemeanor, and he, too, was sentenced to serve but one year The motor vehicle a 1665 Hunters Start Elk Kill This Saturday long overdue A TYPICAL rXAMPLE of this attitude can be found in the traffic laws of at least one state wherein drunk driving is no more than a misdi meanor unless bodily injury to someone other than the driver results. The penalty for a drunk driving misdemeanor can be as little as a fine and does not even call for the mandatory suspension of the driver's license It would appear just as logical to free a crazed man who had been fmng a gun on a crowded street and return his weajxin to him. Two of the greatest dangers on our roads are the drunken and reckless drivers Whv should anyone feel compassion for them'5 Their actions show as much disregard for law and order as do the arts of a burglar who follows a carefully laid plan to steal in the night Also, in many instances, they are a far greater threat to human safety. Hunters were advised to go properly prepared with the necessary pi r life taken. as TRAFFIC REGULATIONS, they should be, are the responsibilities of the various state and local governments. Indifference and the lack of positive action to reduce traffic fatalities, however, have brought on considi rable talk of Federal intervention. Just as through research and positive action we have isolated and conqueied the germs which cause many dread diseases, so can we remove the slaughterers who litter our highways with broken and battered bodies, But it cannot be done by showing pity or offering excuses for those who wantonly violate the basic rules of traffic safety. It was The Transcript and Bulletin which was seeking the young man for geneial cleanup and apprentice training. Thirty two applications were received by mail, and each young man was a topnotcher, willing and anxious to work, and a great majority of them actually in need of employment from a monetary standpoint Only one could be hired. What about the other thirty one Young American manhood, eager and willing to work, and actually m need of such employment, and no positions open. One of the national tragedies today in America is this group of ambitious eager and willing and financially needful young men (and for that matter young women) who have nothing to do in spare hours, many of whom are tied down by rules and law whereby they cannot be employed, and most who can comply with the the working rules can find no place to put in their part time efforts. The other national tragedy is the retirement of highly skilled physically fit and energetic citizenry under the old age pension rules. America is indeed weakening the nation by the happenings in both of these fields of the youth and oldsters. A company or person who could have the genius to work out an avenue of employment for the young man of this community on an after school and Saturday basis, who are otherwise unoccupied, would be a great benefactor. The Tooele Smelter has been very good along this effort, but due to age regulations, mostly young men of college years have been employed. Many local youth can give credit to the Tooele Smelter for his college degree, and when Bauer was working they also did their share to assist youth in their hour of need. 16 ...AND Age Hunters Time is rapidly running out for who have not yet to purchase a hunting 11 qualified cense for the upcoming bird and big game hunts. The law requires all juveniles, ages 14, 15 and 16 years, to show in evidence that a certificate they have successfully passed the gun safety training required course prior to purchasing a 1960 hunting license. Juveniles, ages 17, 18, 19 and 20 years of age, must show a 1959 hunting license, evidence they have passed the gun training course, or evidence of comparable training in the safe handling of firearms prior to such practice The course requires training classes over a period of several days, with the necessary time of teaching soon precluding juveniles completing the course before the start of the hunts Names of qualified instructors may be obtained from local conservation officers, fish and game offices or from license agents. for Trim!
