Tooele once was a busy smelting community. Now the smelter is closed and the four hundred families who woik-ethere are stranded. A thousand persons with nowhere to go and nothing to do until copper comes back, an event which seems to them as imminent as the millennium. Along its narrow streets are 'homes: Tiny little black wooden shacks, blistering under the desert sun, windows broken, shades crooked and torn; steps to the little scraps of porches cra7y and insecure. Peer within and you can see dingy bits of essential furniture, women in Mother Hubbards moving slowly alxiut their housework, men just sitting There are empty beer bars, with those little mechanical ball games thick with dust, and pool tables that clearly have not known the click of a ball in a long, long time. And so the fantastic prevarication went on and on without the least semblance of truth, except that the name of Tooele was attached. Seldom has a community raised up in such wrathful unity ns this provoked in Tooele, with the city officials ordering the city attorney to investigate the possibility of a libel damage suit. Dr. Murray Shields head of the department of business at the University of Alaska, on a visit to his parents here, reports Alaska as an empire of promise. Blaine Gowans, age 21, son of Mrs. Albert Cowans was killed in an auto accident near Garfield. Miss Rosemary Joy, a Tooele miss, makes California newspaper headlines by the rescue of a drowning youth from the ocean. With Sir Malcolm Campbell attaining a speed of 300 miles an hour on the Tooele County salt flats, we are now the center of world attention. Tooele County should take action to rename the spot after Tooele County and make such other regulations that we could benefit from a publicity standpoint. At that rate, the 3 million square miles of continental U S could be photographed by high flying jets in just four missions of four hours each. Soviet Russia contains 7 9 million squat e nules, more than 2lj times the area of the U S. It is nearly three tunes us wide as the U S from east to west, but nowhere more than twice the distance from north to south. Russia, as a result, could be photographed in its entirety by U S reconnaist sance cameras in 8 to 10 flights, euth taking perhaps 12 hours Or it could be coveted by 12 north-soutjet missions.
