We have talked to several persons, who decline to be identified, but who at the same time give indication that this league is almost a certainty, barring unforeseen circumstances at the present. In other words, the Skyline Conference as we now know it, can count its existance as only relatively short. Certain factors will place the starting date at yet a few years away. All present Skyline Conference teams have filled their football schedules through 1964, which means that a new conference, at least as far as football is concerned is no nearer than 1965! However, basketball is another matter. Schedules are only drawn for the roundball sport for a couple of years. There was a lot of discussion about the new league when the Skyline was selecting a new commissioner. The new commissioner was said to not be interested if the league were about to break up. Assurances were reportedly given that it would not break up . . . the job was his. Of course, he still has five years to work with the league schools until their present scheduling expires. And who of us is there can count our jobs secure for five years ahead? we think the new We reiterate what we said before league could be a very exciting thing The new interest and life y blood it could stir into our athletics in this area would be of our schools, especially BYU and Utah have had mendous excellent relations with Oregon and Oregon State. Arizona and Arizona State. They know that these schools have the facilities to hold big crowds and can draw the crowds to fill them. Arizona and Arizona State, both of whom played BYU in football last year, drew over 25,000 fans at each game. Oregon and Oregon State are natural rivals much like BYU and Utah, and draw well in their area. The only school with a mediocre football stadium is BYU. New Mexico is just completing a 30,000 seat stadium. The others have stadiums of 30,000 or better. Basketball arenas are on the small side at Arizona and Arizona State but they have promised new gymnasiums, and BYU is planning a 40,000 seat stadium Spring sports would be another matter. There wouldnt be the easy division of scheduling that there is with the present Skyline. But BYU already takes a track tour of New Mexico and the two Arizona schools, and Utah goes down there in baseball, so it could lodging 0 0 hungry '"X i 'T f L ' r tffcb ... be done!
