If thats so, then there ought to be a bright dawning for BYU basketball coach Stan Watts, just around the corner. For never before has the genial mentor found himself in .such a situation as he is in this year. With the toughest schedule ever faced bv a Skyline Conference team, and a patchwotk team to meet it with, the defeats are coming thick and fust. Surprisingly, gloom isnt hanging heavy in the Cougar camp This team still could jell, and after ail, its the conference race white it really counts, In facing two mid America cage powers Kan pr sas and Kansas State this past weekend, we saw Cats in some mighty fast company They are JAjbig , . . fast . . . and good shooters, and a unit, both clubs. N? R R R R X j '4 $:he t d Men like Wullv Franks, guaided by sophomore Brent Peterson Franks has tvo years of previous , experience as a starter for K State. Sonny Ballard, who set a new scoring record I r Wh 33 points against Ron Abglen nr . .j J., Charley Davis who are sophomores. The kids learn, and in playing the tougher schedule, BYU may be put in a more advantageous position once the league race does get going. There are three sophomores in the nation who are receiving the attention of spoils writers and broadcasters and the rabid fans. They are Jerry Lucas, playing in Utah this week against the Utah Utes and BYU, Utahs Billy McGill, and Kansas Us Wayne Hightower. Lucas, at six foot nine inches, is the best of the lot. Hightower, six feet eight and a half inches, though with not the publicity, tha the other two have, is No. 2! McGill, six foot nine inches, who is still only a shooter, lacking in hustle and defense abilities, must come third. BYU will play all three before the season is over. And the Cats tallest effective man is six foot five inches. This boy, Hightower, at KU is one of the finest prospects we have ever seen! As a sophomore, he appears better to us than Bill Russell did in his sophomore days. Though there is a lot of development ahead, we wouldnt guess whether or not he will surprise Russell. He is from Philadelphia, and is following in the footsteps of another former KU star, Wilt Chamberlain, who is now setting the on fire. Where Wilt was called the Big Dipper for his ability to dunk the ball, Hightower has already acquired the moniker the "Little Dipper. The difference is mainly in the size . . . Chamberlain is seven foot two inches. k P s' fbf A At M a X M it if if if if. ANOTHER BASILIO if FULLMER GO? . . aLj . Looks like Carmen Basilio couldn't stay away from the squared circle. He's back in boxing following his defeat by Gene Fullmer, and is now looking for a return engagement with the Middleweight champ. And Gene is more than willing to give him that shot! Gene insisted on the return match clause in the contract with Basilio, when the two fought for the NBA title in San Francisco. It was Basilio who decided not to use it. As a former welterweight champ, he felt he was out of his class in meeting the tough Fullmer. But now, hes apparently changed his mind. The gates for possible Fullmer fights are skyrocketing, and a cut of that money looks gbod. Gene would like to meet Basilio un a return engagement. He feels certain he can win again, and the card should draw well, a a wherever its staged. Gene himself is considering moving up the ladder into a different weight class, tackling Archie Moore for the Light-heavtitle. Old Arch has been around a long time, and its doubtful if Gene could solve his secrets of staying young so long! Boxing certainly has received a lot of good publicity from the Utah strong-boy- , Fullmers, career. It was fitting last week that Marv Jensen should be honored as one of the outstanding men of the sport. For, wha he has given boxing can be matched by few other men. The gymnasium he has built on his property in West Jordan, for the use of the West Jordan youngsters is a model plan for both a recreation center and a boxing headquarters, when Gene is in training. It s nice to know that there are men around like this, who are good for the boxing game and the community, too. if if y if. 4 m the singles, at the Utah State Tournament, in Kearns this year.
