Rich, Utah Adjutant General, today announced by the Utah National Guard of the 1959 AAU boxing tournament. Contests will be held in the Utah National Guard armory, 1523 East Sunnyside avenue. Salt Lake City, on 20, 21 27, and 28 March, according to tournament Harold McNeil, chairman of the Intermountain AAU boxing committee. Col. Joe E. Whitesides of the Utah National Guard has been named chairman of the Utah Guards boxing commission, in an appointment by General Rich. In this capacity, he will n the Guards position as sors of the tournament with the AAU and at the same time handle all boxing cards presented exclusively by the Utah National Guard, both Army and Air divisions. Mr. McNeill reported plans of the tournament include ten bouts each of the four nights of competition, with at least one bout in each of the ten weight divisions If necessary, more than one bout in each weight division will be held. Mr. McNeill said he expects fighters to enter the competition representing Jhe following Utah orthe Utah National ganizations: Guard, the Police Athletic league of Cedar City, the Ute Boxing club of Fort Duchesne, Orem post of Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Idaho State college of Pocatello, the Price Elks club, the Tooele Boxing club, the Ogden Hep Cats and the Scotty Sneddon group of Ogden, the Utah Oil Report and the Rotary Boys club of Salt Lake City. Many, unattached con- testants from throughout the state are also expected to enter. Schedules are arranged so that no contestant will be required to fight more than once during each days competition. Senior division preliminaries will be held on Mar 20, 21, and. 27. Utah State AAU championship bouts will be held March 28. This is just one of the many ways the Utah National Guard is participating in civic programs to allow maximum use of our armories. An attendance charge of $1 for aduhs and 50 cents for children under 12, accompanied by a parent or an adult, will be made to supplement the cost of boxine equipment needed by the participating boxing clubs.
