How old aie you? Is your answer: "Young! Or, is your answer; "Old." When are you young and when are you old? Do you say old because your hair is turning gray? Do you say young because your skin is not wrinkled? Will you say old when you are 70? Would you say young if you were 1G? When are you old and when are you young? People, when asked how old they are, immediately think of their age. This age, called the chronological age, is calculated from the number of years Ihey have lived on earth after their bnth. It is this age which makes them decide whether they are young or old. Fortunately, the chronological age does not deter- dethis. How old we apends upon other things. One of the-'- e is how well our body functions. A heart that is not able to pump enough blood is old. It makes no difference if it is in a 22 year old body. Kidneys that can remove all waste matter, even if they work in a 7G year old body, are young. In order to determine our true agv. it is necessary to learn if the various parts of our body (liver lungs, stomach, pancreas, bons marrow, ears, legs, etc ) can do the necessary job. If they can, then we have youth. This is called physiological age. The second is the type of material that makes up our body. We consist of parts that must do special work in eider for us to continue to Lve. These paits aie mine held in place by supporting structures. When these working parts are destroyed by disease or injuries, they ate replaced by new supporting structures called scar tissue. For example, when a person has one type of heart attack, a portion of his heart muscle dies. The destroyed muscle is replaced by scar and r,fr new heart muscle. It is in this way that working parts are replaced by supporting parts. As the number of working parts become less, our body less efficient in dofng its job and we become older. This is called anatomical age. Finally how old we are is determined by the functioning of our mind. Here we must look at things differently. The longer wo live, the better is our opportunity to mature. It is only after the passage of time that we can mature or "grow up mentally. This does not mean that we automatically 'glow up after so many years. We are given the opportunity to niatuie, and we must take advantage of this opportunity. If we do not, we can find oursolvi s with the body of an adult and the mind of a child. Too youthful a mind is not desirable. But we must be careful. Unfortunately with the passage of years, it is possible to allow ourselves to become "old" mentally. This scn'lity is also undesirable. The psychological ago must stay within certain limits. It is within the limits of maturity and not either too young or too old. Thus, the question how old arc you can not bo simply answered. Our chronological age will continue to mcrea-e- . As long as we live, we ago chronologically. In this sense, only by dying young can we remain young. II is for a youthful physiological age and anatomical age that we strive so that our body will operate Yet we do not want a Have pie meringue troubles?
