This festive holiday is also a great opportunity for kids of all ages to express their creative spirit. Following are a few ideas for spooktacular Halloween activities that are sure to produce a whole load of frightful family fun: Involve kids in creating their own haunted look with no sew costumes. Keep the bewitched memories from past Halloweens alive. Each year, take photos of all family members in costume and display the photos in festive photo frames. decorations. For an easy ghost decoraEnjoy a family evening making tion, cover helium balloons with an old bed sheet and tie off at the neck. Draw spooky faces on the sheet and secure with a string to a tree or railing. Rouse some fright by telling ghost stories round-robistyle. Light the room with only a flashlight and have each person hold the flashlight while telling a part of the story. The last person in the circle decides the end to the tale. No matter what the activity, make sure to provide some "hone chillin brew and ghoulish goodies. Following is a quick and easy recipe to set the Halloween mood. boo-tif- n hair-raisin- g Bone Chillin Brew (Makes 24 servings) ' Floating hands: Water Clear plastic gloves Rubber bands or twist ties Punch: 2 bottles (64 fluid ounces each) Punch Flavor 100 Juice, chilled 1 can (12 fluid ounces) frozen lemonade concentrate, slightly thawed 4 cans (12 fluid ounces each) lemon-limsoda, chilled For floating hands: Pour water into gloves, adding enough water to fill the gloves loosely but not so full that the fingers will not move. Fasten gloves with rubber bands or twist ties. Line baking sheet with paper towels and place filled gloves on paper towels. Freeze for 3 hours or until firm. For punch: Combine Juicy Juice and lemonade concentrate in large punch bowl. Gradually stir in soda. Carefully cut gloves off hands with scissors. Float hands in punch. e Christmas Festival planned for November 20th The Juab Fine Arts Council is presenting the 1st an- nual Christmas Festival to be held Saturday, November 20, from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. It will take place in the Senior Citizens Center, 160 North Main Street, Nephi. The public is invited to participate in this Holiday Celebration. There are several ways the public can be involved: Decorated Christmas Tree display (some for sale) Nativity (Creche) dis- play Craft and bake sale Visit with Santa (photos available) Angel Tree (Sub for Santa project Entertainment interested in participating is asked to contact KristiAnn Wright at Anyone who in 623-109- Bidding on decorated trees will take place the evening before the festival. Flu season is coming So what should you do to make this flu season a healthy one? Getting a flu shot is the primary measure to avoid illness from the flu, however, illness can still occur. So who should get vaccinated? Anyone who doesnt want the flu! There are some people who are at increased risk to develop complications from the flu, people 50 years of age or older, children months of age, pregnant women, and people of ant age group with chronic medical conditions, such as heart or lung disease, asthma, or diabetes. Also all health care workers, EMTs, and those that work with preschool age children should get vaccinated. If you are in a high-risgroup for complications from the flu and you get symptoms, contact your doctor. Some complications caused by the flu include bacterial pneumonia, dehydration, and worsening of chronic medical conditions such as congestive heart failure, asthma, or diabetes. Children may also get sinus or ear infections. What are some of the common flu systems? The flu usually 3 k flu-lik- e comes on suddenly and may include the following symptoms: High fever Headache Tiredness weakness (may be extreme) Dry cough Sore throat Runny nose Body or muscle aches Diarrhea and vomiting (more common in children) How do you know if I have the flu or just a cold? The flu and the common cold are both respiratory illness caused by different viruses. Because these two types of illnesses have similar symptoms, it can be difficult to tell them apart. In general, the flu is worse than the common cold and the symptoms such as fever, body aches; extreme tiredness, and dry cough are more common and intense. Colds are more likely to cause a runny or stuffy nose. If you have the flu there are some emergency warning signs that require urgent medical attention. In children these may include: High or prolonged fever Fast breathing or trouble breathing Bluish skin color Not drinking enough fluids Changes in mental status such as not waking up or not interacting, being so irritable that the child does not want to be held, or seizures. symptoms improve, but then return with fever and a worse cough. In adults, the emergency warnings or signs that require urgent medical attention include. High or prolonged fever Pain or pressure in the chest Near fainting or fainting Severe or persistent vomiting If you suffer from any of these it is extremely important that you seek medical care immediately, either by calling your doctor or going to the emergency room. If you or someone you know is experiencing any of the signs described above or other unusually severe symptoms, get medical attention. Dont wait until they get worse or you get completely dehydrated. So what can you do for the flu? If you get symptoms and you are not at high risk for complications from the flu: Get plenty of rest Drink plenty of fluids Avoid using alcohol or tobacco Consider taking over- medications to relieve the symptoms of the flu ( but never give aspirin to children or teenagers who have symptoms ) STAY HOME and avoid contact with other people to protect them from catching your illness. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze to protect others from your germs. Most healthy people recover from the flu without complications. The Central Utah Public Health Department will be receiving flu vaccine sometime in the month of October.
