West Nile Virus has been detected now in Box Elder, Davis, Salt Lake, Utah, Duchesne, Grand, Washington and Uintah counties. In addition, the West has been especially hard-hi- t this year. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) figures indicate there are, to date, 102 cases in California, 44 in Colorado and 274 cases in Arizona. All the Utah mosquitoes that tested positive are Culex .tarsalis, which only bite between dusk and dawn. The hours from dusk to dawn are peak mosquito biting times for many species of mosquitoes. Take extra care to use repellent and protective clothing during evening and early morning or consider avoiding outdoor activities during these times. In addition to killing the mosquitoes and removing habitat, the best thing local residents can do, according to The West Nile Virus home page of the CDC, an agency of the US government, at www. is to use their slogan and Fight The Bite! When dealing with West Nile virus, prevention is the best bet. Fighting mosquito bites reduces your risk of getting this disease, along with others that mosquitoes can carry. Take the common sense steps below to reduce your risk: avoid bites and illness; clean out the mosquitoes from the places where you work and play; help your community control the disease. To date, the state of Utah total includes five infected humans, 33 virus-carryin- g mosquito batches, one dead bird and three sentinel chickens with the virus. According to CDC informa- tion, if someone is bitten by an infected mosquito, theres only a 20 percent chance that West Nile Virus will develop. The chance that any one person is going to become ill from a single mosquito bite remains low. The risk of severe illness and death is highest for people over 50 years old, although people of all ages can become ill. Few die. Most will have symptoms similar to flu, but in a smaller number of cases, individu- - use. Those who want to use the facility for a longer period of time need to contact the DWR office in Spnngville to make arrangements. The other thing we all agreed on, said Orme, is that no alcohol possession nor consumption can occur on the premises. Since DWR owns the facilities, they are the organization which has the legal right to make rules and regulations concerning the ways in which the area is used. They will put up signs and we (the sheriffs department) will enforce those regulations, he said. Disobeying the restrictions imposed by DWR at the site can result in a fine. Infractions will be considered as Class C misdemeanors. We want to see if we can make Burrastons Ponds a nice place for families and for Scouts to use for their camps, said Orme. Right now, it is a dangerous place on the weekends. als will develop neurological symptoms. Weather has some impact on mosquitoes, but the current cooler, rainier weather is just what mosquitoes like. When its extremely hot, mosquitoes die quickly. However, approximately 10 days after a rainstorm, the number of mosquitoes increases significantly. And C. tarsalis has a long Many of those now alive will be alive next spring. life-6pa- In the r, mosquitoes will stop biting people and start drinking nectar and fruit to build up their own fat so that they can lay low over the winter. Contrary to popular belief, cold weather doesnt kill them. The numbers go down because as it gets colder they start to over winter. The CDC found that West Nile virus activity occurred much earlier this year than in the past. They suggest that everyone get double protection: wear long sleeves during peak mosquito biting hours, and spray DEET repellent directly onto clothes. Mosquitoes may bite through thin clothing, so spraying clothes with repellent containing permethrin or DEET will give extra protection. Look for: on the label. Dont apply repellents containing permethrin directly to skin. Do not spray repellent containing DEET on the skin under your clothing. Apply directly to exposed skin when going outdoors. Even a short time being outdoors can be long enough to get a mosquito bite. Drain standing water from around the home because mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water.Limit the number of places around the home for mosquitoes to breed by getting rid of items that hold water. Some mosquitoes like to come indoors. Keep them outside by having screens on both windows and doors. Offer to help neighbors whose screens might be in bad shape. Report dead birds to authorities. Dead birds may be a sign that West Nile virus is circulating between birds and the mosquitoes in an area. Over 130 species of birds are known to have been infected with West Nile virus, though not all infected birds will die. Its important to remember that birds die from many well-fittin- g other causes besides West Nile virus. By reporting dead birds to state and local health departments, you can play an important role in monitoring West Nile virus, said CDC By Rebecca Dopp Tips and Feedback beccaSnephitlmeanewsxom .sometimes more entertaining than the games Olympic commercials. . Ive been watching the Olympics this past week and have noticed that sometimes the commercials are more entertaining than the actual event going on. One of my favorites features athletes competing in the 4x4 foot relay How funny is that? It features four relay teams, poised to start the race, spaced just inches apart from each other. The starter shoots the gun, and they pass the baton from hand to hand within seconds. Some teams drop the baton. Its just a riot to watch. Thats how Id want to compete. Im too to actually run around the track. Another favorite of mine is a Visa commercial. It features athletes w ho went to the games unprepared. For example, a fencer without his sabre is, getting poked by his opponent continuously, and a rowing team is trying to paddle with their hands because they forgot their oars. It is a very funny commercial. Its trying to tell you that you shouldnt go anywhere without being prepared, hence, take Visa with you. Anyway, keep enjoying the games and watch out for that relay commercial. It makes me laugh every time I see it. Scary mother moment I had a scary mother moment last week. I had been working on the computer downstairs while my two youngest kids were playing upstairs, or so I thought. I went to r check on them and found that my old wasnt with Emily and her friend. Hmmm. I checked in every room and closet. I looked under beds. I went outside and checked all around my house. Nervousness started to set in. I called my neighbor to see if hed gone over their to play with her kids. Nope. More nervousness. I got on the and made a pass around the neighborhood. Nothing. My neighbors had gotten on the ball and started a makeshift search party. We started making the rounds to houses to inquire if theyd seen Ryan. Nope. (Im starting to wonder if I should call the police at this point.) Then my neighbor told me to go and check in the house again thinking maybe led crawled into a closet and fallen asleep. Okay. I went lack in and everywhere. Emily and I were looking downstairs when she went to move a blanket. It didnt move. I prodded the lump of blankets and it was solid. I pulled back the blanket and there was Ryan. Dead asleep. 3IG sigh of relief. I picked him up and went to tell all my neighbors that Id found him. The whole experience made me nervous because Austin did this to me when we lived in Washington City. He was the same age and had wandered down to the park, a block and a half away! I looked for an hour. It didnt help that I was seven months pregnant with Emily. Talk about emotional overload. Anyway, Ryan didnt know he was lost and kept telling me that he was line. I am truly grateful for all my neighbors who stepped up and helped me look for Ryan. Their actions made me glad that I live in a community that looks out for one two-yea- four-wheel- officials. Dont kill the messenger To those who are tired of reading letters about the Walnut Grove Subdivision, we apologize. I too am tired of the entire subject. I cannot in good conscience let last weeks article be the last information printed in the paper. In the first place no one informed the newspaper or any of its reporters what to write. Mrs. Trauntvein reported on what she both saw and heard at every public city council meeting. (Tape recordings of the meetings are available for public listening at the Nephi City offices upon request.) That is her job, and her busy schedule would not permit consultation with those involved. I take my hat off to her and the staff for at Nephis Times-New- s allowing people to express feelings, and for helping us be aware of the happenings and news in and around Nephi City and Juab County. This forum was chosen to express questions, because having a public audience seems to increase fairness. My first question is about the water protection system that is supposedly being received. Could this be a fire hydrant? Will it be solely a gift for Norma Malquists private use, or will it be for subdivision safety and safety of others along the street, and if so, will it be placed on subdivision property, or on ' her private ground? I was present at all sign- ings by Malquists. They were never given a $30,000.00 building lot, nor permit. A building permit of that magnitude doesnt even exist as far as I am aware. Again it is reiterated that some citizens were given permission to build on property that they already own and pay taxes on. They will also need to obtain a building permit (and pay hook up fees for their services) if and when they choose to build on this property. Land owners to the north of 300 South stand to make no financial gains from the road development.
