Shortcutting soil preparation is common because its hard Hy Maggie Wolf USU Horticulturist Planning a new landscape from scratch or retrofitting an old one? It can seein an insurmountable task, especially if you are on a budget, dont have a lot of spare time, and want a landscape less traditional and more Hy focusing on water-conservin- three important concepts: functional layout, irrigation zones, and soil preparation, you can meet homeowner association deadlines, budget constraints, and buy the time you need to achieve a beautiful, sustainable, and functional landscape. Function First Do you need a playground for children? A vegetable garden area? Easy access from garage to back doors? Evergreen screen to block an unpleasant view? Do you have a steep slope that needs a retaining wall? Or a gentle slope you would prefer level? Careful consideration of how you want your landscape to work is essential. Even a beautiful landscape can be dissatisfying, if you cant use it the way youd like. Sprinkler Zones To irrigate efficiently, group plants with similar water needs together. Lawn area sprinklers should be controlled by a different valve than the flower beds or shrubs. Plan ahead and create distinct, separate irrigation zones. Even if you start out with all lawn, you can easily change these distinct zones to use type plants in the future. low-wat- Soil Preparation Utahs native soil is very low in organic matter. For na- tive plants such as sagebrush, penstemon, and Apache plume, no amendments are s required. For Kentucky and other organic matter such as comblue-gras- non-native- post, composted manures, and composted wood chips can make a significant improvement in the root depth and plant vigor. But beware; these amendments must be mixed into the native soil to prevent layers of dissimilar soil types. The general rule of thumb is, for every inch added, mix it in 2 inches deep. If you add 6 inches of amendment, the soil should work, hauling and mixing organic matter into the soil is nobody's idea of fun. Shortcuts result in poor root depths and decreased plant vigor, so that weed infestations and disease problems become battles. Good soil preparation will create a landscape more easily managed, needing less fertilizers, water, pesticides, and labor. day-to-da- y Planning and Soil Prep Pay Off New landscapes are a challenge and major hurdle in the improvement of a new or older home. Most people, when faced with a bare dirt landscape, think immediately of covering the surface with grass. Not a bad thought, since erosion, mud, and blowing dust are all nuisances without lawn in place. But before the lawn can be planted, a sprinkler system probably needs to be installed. This is when things can get complicated. The learning curve for irrigation is fairly steep, and youre only going to do it once, so its not t a to hire this job done. Even so, learn some of the basics so you'll know you're getting the kind of system you w'ant. Its almost impossible to a sprinkler system once it has been installed. The dilemma of sprinkler system design is that you almost need to know your landscape design before you can plan the sprinklers, but you need to know the capabilities of sprinkler and drip systems before you can design your landscape! Which comes first, chicken or egg, sprinklers or plants? Reading some publications on Water Wise Landscaping, such as Keanes USU Extension publication, can shed light on the design dilemma.
