M any have been caught off guard and have been killed or severely injured by the tractor running over them, by assuming the tractor was in park. This typically occurs when one is in a rush to get a job done. They exit the tractor leaving it running in neutral without the brake set, assuming the ground is level. It becomes a surprise, when you end up pinned under the rear tires of the tractor - or worse, dead! 3. Allowing extra riders is another way adults, and especially children, have been killed or injured. If there is only one seat on a tractor, there should only be one rider. These types of incidents are by far the hardest to deal Tractor errors to blame for increase in agriculture fatalities Ferguson, UFBF Director - Farm Safety fa- By A.J. Nationwide agriculture talities increased during the year 2002. Farming is ranked t below mining for having the most work related fatalities in the U.S. The average number of farmers killed annually has increased to 730. Tw enty one of every 100,000 farmers are killed in some sort of farm related incident. One of the major causes of farm fatalities is the tractor. Many fatalities and injuries have occurred by being run over by ones own tractor. This has occurred by: 1. Trying to bypass start the tractor or implement. Bypass starting involves a person touching a wrench or screwdriver to the terminals of the starter motor or solenoid of the tractor. It also means the individual doing the bypass starting is not on the seat of the tractor but standing to the side of it, usually in front of the rear tires. Should the tractor be in gear, he or she could be run over. 2. Forgetting to set the park brake or put the tractor into ju.-- Fuelwood available in Uinta National Forest Uinta National Forest personnel will sell permits to cut fuelwood, and posts or poles, for personal use beginning Monday, June 21, and continue until Friday, September 21. Aspen, subalpine fir and Engelmann spruce are available within the cutting area. Fuelwood permits may be purchased at the Heber Ranger District Office, 2460 South Highway 40, Heber into thinking it is acceptable to have your children ride on the tractor to learn how to operate it. Teach them by having them practice in an empty field or other free area where you can observe and instruct them without being on the tractor. Stand a safe distance from the tractor or other machinery that they are learning on, and offer them instructions. 4. Not having an SMV sticker on the tractor, or not replacing them when they are old and not as visible is another factor that contributes to deaths and injuries of those in agriculture. As the population of our state continues to increase, the number of vehicles on the road increases. Which means the roads are not as safe as they used to be. Use the Slow Moving Vehicle sticker to warn others on the road to use caution when approaching your tractor or other implements. There have been an increasing number of tractor rollovers in the U.S., due to vehicles colliding with tractors on public roads. Even though the tractor is bigger and heavier, its center of gravity is higher causing a rollover when hit by a car at high speed. Utah Title 17.6 refers to the SMV sticker and states the 1 following: (7) (a) A person may not operate a vehicle on a low-spee- d highway without displaying on the rear of the vevehicle, a hicle identification emblem that complies with the Society of Automotive Engineers standard SAE j943.1 As you can plainly see these are trivial reasons for one to lose a life. Answer by: Richard Beard, Utah State University Extension Agricultural Engineering Specialist Each year, hospital emergency rooms treat more than 60,000 individuals with lawn injuries. A majority of the injuries occur in young people under the age of 16 and are primarily attributed to unsafe practices rather than equipment malfunctions. Safety guidelines recommend that children under the age of 12 not operate power equipment. A persons body size, strength, coordination, experience and maturity affect his or her ability to safely operate a lawnmower. To improve the safety of mowing equipment for young people as well as adults, consider the following tips. Review the operators manual and the manufacturer's recommendations for safe operation. Perform regular maintenance on your mower as outlined in the operators manual. Prior to using your mower, check for worn or loose tires, belts, guards and covers. The mower blade(s) should be sharpened periodically to improve quality of cut and maintain operating efficiency. Always wear safety glasses, snug fitting clothes, long pants and work shoes when mowing. In some instances hearing protection is also necessary. Mower shields and guards must remain in place and operational for personal protection. Know how to turn off the lawnmower in an emergency. Never bypass safety kill switches or levers or disable controls that stop blade rotation. Older mowers without safety equipment should be replaced with newer models with modern safety features. Do not place hands or other objects in the discharge chute or under the deck while mower is operating. Remove objects and debris from the care-relate- d of allergic skin rashes in the United States. Experts estimate that as much as 70 percent of the population is allergic to urushiol the oil found in the sap of these plants, and that up to 55 million Americans develop allergic reactions to it each year. Poison ivy reactions are triggered by the bodys allergic response to urushiol, whereby the immune system attacks the skin containing the oil, producing symptoms such as rashes, oozing blisters, itching and swelling. The allergic response occurs anywhere from 12 to 48 hours after exposure to the oil and can take as long as 1 0 days to three weeks to heal. Zanfel Laboratories, Inc., the producer of Zanfel Poison Ivy Wash, has developed an information pamphlet on ways to prevent and treat an allergic reaction to poison ivy, oak or sumac. Information included in the pamphlet has been favorably reviewed through the American Academy of Family Physicians Foundations Health Education Program for Patients. Highlights from the education piece are featured ), -- Diets high in smoked foods or foods not properly area prior to mowing. Objects such as rocks, stumps and sticks easily become dangerous projectiles. If a mower has an open discharge chute, direct it away from people, animals or fragile property since injuries from objects launched by mower blades account for many accidents. Do not operate mowing equipment around children. Never leave a running mower unattended. Larger commercial mowers sometimes allow the mowing blade to be disengaged while the engine is running. If operating this type of mower, take special care when removing the bag to empty clippings or when performing other activities near the mower when the engine is running. Accidents frequently occur when mowers are operated on inclines with wet, slippery grass. To avoid this, wait until the grass on the incline is dry, then mow across the slope with a mower or up and down the slope with a riding mower. Never allow passengers on riding mowers. Do not use the power of a mower to transport it over a gravel road or other surface. Disengage the blade or turn the mower off and push it rather than mowing over a dangerous surface. walk-behin- d g debris-covere- d Allow mowers to cool before adding fuel or working on the engine. Do not add fuel while the mower is running and do not mow or add fuel while smoking. When turning power equipment off, allow all rotating parts to stop fuel-powere- d before attempting repair or adjustment. Always remove the spark plug before attempting repairs or blade adjustment on gasoline powered equipment. If using an AC electric powered mower, mow when the grass is dry to reduce the chance of electrical shock. Also take special care to prevent mowing over electrical power cords. As with all power tools, do not hurry when operating. People who mow at excessive speeds are risking injury and death. Work cautiously to protect yourself and others. inspection of your tractor. Cleanse: Immediately to the skin anywhere from five minutes to two hours after exposure. Once this occurs, plain soap and water are no longer effective at removing urushiol. 2. Decontaminate: Remove arid wash all clothes, gloves, shoes and shoelaces that may have come in contact with the oil. 3. Relieve: If signs or symptoms appear, use Zanfel Poison Ivy Wash. See your doctor: A visit is in order if symptoms worsen andor the rash spreads to the mouth, eyes or genitals. Severe reactions may require further treatment. Poison ivy treatments, such as steroids like hydrocortisone, also may produce mild and temporary relief of the itch.
