The cards have a map showing the four geographic regions of the state so that the responder may mark the location on the map of the area of concern. At present, UDOT is iden- tifying transportation needs, assessing existing road conditions statewide and soliciting public input. In June projects will be identified and in October a public review comment period for the Draft Long Range Plan will be conducted. Utah County, located in Region 3, along with Juab County, faces a transportation crisis. According to projections by the Utah Department of Transportation, by 2030 Utah Countys population is expected to swell by 87 percent. In other words, the 360,000 current residents will become 677,000. With such growth projections, officials say Utah Countys highways will come to a grinding halt with con- stant traffic jams. What kind of effect that snarled traffic will have on Juab County is something the local population is being asked to consider. The Dan Jones survey also revealed that Utah County residents would support a tax hike to pay for mass transportation options with 70 percent of residents interviewed in favor of a proposed quarter-cen- t sales tax increase to fund transit options such as expanding commuter rail from Salt Lake to Payson; Residents in Weber, Davis and Salt Lake county pay a similar quarter cent tax that funded light rail options. According to projections the Utah Department by of Transportation, by 2030 Utah Countys population is expected to swell by 87 per- cent with the population go- ing from 360,000 to 677,000. Results of the survey indicate that twice as many people have a solid opinion in favor of a sales tax increase than those who strongly oppose the idea, said Dianne Meppen of Dan Jones and Associates. The survey also indicated more support for a sales tax increase than a gas tax in- crease. UDOT District 3 encompasses Utah, Juab, Wasatch, Duchesne, Uintah, Daggett, Sanpete, Sevier, Piute, Wayne, Garfield, and Kane Counties.
