It is a smaller cousin of the sugar maple that decorates eastern landscapes with brilliant fall color. Despite its lavish fall color, Utahs maple has scarcely been introduced into urban landscapes. These maples should soon be bursting into their fall colorations of red, orange and gold. These color changes are triggered by the shortened daylight hours, and enhanced by cooler evenings. An abundant water supply will help maintain the color longer. In dry years, the trees do not achieve the optimum color hues that are present in wetter years. The botanical name of this maple, accepted by the Forest Service, is Acer grandidentatun which means bigtooth maple. It is also called mountain maple, scrub maple and canyon maple. Whatever you call it, it would make a welcome addition to your landscape! PLANTING A NEW LAWN September is one of the best times to sow lawn seed. The more moderate temperatures at this time of year encourage even germination because it is easier to prevent the seed bed drying out. SEED SELECTION. Select a good Kentucky Blue-grablend. Many books and pamphlets recommend Zoysia or Bermuda grass. The are warm season grasses not suitable for the conditions here, along the Wasatch Front. To determine the type of grasses in your mixture, check the package for Seed Mixture Analysis. The best grasses are listed find Texunder the tured Types and to the right of each type is the percentage of germination you can expect. The germination percent should be ss sub-headin- g: 85 or above. Other sub-headin- like coarse Kinds: and other ingredients should read 0.00 No noxious weeds should be present in the mix. Baron, Glade, Fylk-inNuggett, Vita, Windsor are a just few of the quality, fine, textured bluegrasses which make a good blend. Remember! A mix may be composed of several grass g, composed varieties of the same grass. Fescues and rye grasses are useful in certain special situations only. For instance, if you are planting in heavy shade or are anticipating extra heavy traffic in one area, these grasses may need to be included as your mix. However, consult your nurseryman on this subject. As a rule, clover is not desirable. It tends to take over the grass and it will attract bees and become more of a pest than a help. FALL WEED CONTROL Fall is one of the best times to control weeds in your yard and garden. In the fall, perennial weeds are beginning to store energy for the winter, and application of an herbicide at this time can be very effective. For weeds in your lawn such as Bindweed (morning glory), curly dock, dandelion, mallow, puncture vine and many other broad-leave- d type weeds, the D D D tanical Garden Horse 4-- H Show coming to Juab County On September 24-2- 5, Juab County will be the site of the State 4-- H Individual Horse Show. 280 horse members from every county in the state will be participating. In addition to the participating members, approximately 1,000 people will be in the area for the two day event. To give county businesses and others a chance to participate in the show, we are providing an opportunity for businesses to in- clude items in the members packets. Items could include coupons, pencils, pens, travel brochures, etc. We are providing this service at no charge.
