American Cancer Society's Father's Day focus on prostate cancer awareness It is estimated that in 1998 more Utahns will be diagnosed with prostate cancer than with breast cancer. This year about 1000 Utahns will learn they have this disease. This Fathers Day the American Cancer Society is focusing on this concern as it encourages men aged 5Q and over to discuss their risks and options with their health care providers. Because it important to allow every individual to make informed decisions regarding prostate cancer and their own health, the American Cancer Society is making their resources readily available to the public. Prostate cancer is a serious disease that can be successfully treated if detected early. This Fathers Day, the American Cancer Society thanks families who care enough to make sure loved ones do all they can to protect their health. The American Cancer Society encourages health care providers to take an active role in the awareness campaign by ing their patients about the po- - ' tential risks and benefits of prostate cancer intervention. It is important that otherwise healthy men over age 50 are offered Prostate-Specifi- c Antigen (PSA) blood tests and Digital Rectal Examinations (DRE) on an annual basis. However, high-ris- k individuals such as those with a family history of or cancer should consider receiving annual examinations befoTe the age of 50. The American Cancer Society is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy, and service. This Fathers Day is a great opportunity to do something special to guard your own health or the health of Hie men in your life. For additiwial prostate cancer guidelines or general cancer information, call your local American Cancer Society office or or visit their website at www.cancer.org.
