Science has changed the way think about childrens mental health. Research shows that mental illnesses involve both biological and environmental factors. As a society we have been conditioned to live with mental disorders until they pass. Children are thought to be in a stage, difficult, rebellious, or acting out. The lack of acknowledgment and treatment for illnesses can cause devastating future problems. There has been a standard of not labeling a child with a mental illness but rather with a behavioral disorder, moral problems, violence, conduct problems and more. There is a reluctance to label children with a diagnosis of a mental illness while other labels devastate self esteem and families. Childrens mental disorders can be recognized, diagnosed and treated. The incidence of mental disorders among youth in the general we population has increased from 11.8 in 1981 to 20 in 1996. About one half of these children are classified as having a serious emotional disorder. Brain stud-- . ies show a notable correlation between brain activity an'd severity of symptoms. A for a mental illness can trigger an onset from: (1) recurring stresses, (2) changes in the model of caretaking, (3) exposure to violence, abuse or (4) other experiences that cause high stress including loss and rejection. Depression in children has a 75 recurrent rate and can cause significant impairment and high risk for suicide. Many treatments are promising and standard medications offer hope for short term relief. Parent training and school based behavioral strategies are also effective. In addition to anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, and depression the other most prevalent mental disorders in childhood include: post traumatic stress disorder, autism, childhood schizophrenia, conduct - SALT CITY CANDLES -- MAKES GREAT GIFTS Anyone interested in earning Free Candles or just purchasing them. Anxiety and separation disorders are also common childhood conditions. Childhood onset of obsessive compulsive disorder is mor prevalent than- previously thought and may not be identified, which causes undue suffering and worsening symptoms. ADD and ADHD can be extremely pernicious conditions. Impul- sive behaviors and distractibili-neglec- t, ty can embarrass and humiliate children and youth. Children often have more than one mental disorder. ; The findings of recent studies show that the same treatments that work for adults do not necessarily work for children. The developing nervous system and other developmental phases require that adult research not be arbitrarily applied to children. Research on juveniles in detention found that there is a high level of diagnosable mental dis- orders among youth in detention centers. The facilities studied showed 65 to 100 of youth had one or more mental disorders. This is telling because it indicates what happens to many of our children and youth who have serious emotional disorder or mental illness. - ; Freelance Writer Sue Tippetts "A uuw'udULu The eleventh annual Utah Best Dam MS 150 Bike Tbur, is Saturday and Sunday, June 27 and 28 in Cache Valley.
