MynuTturtwh Correspondent A Nephi irrigation water-use- r told Nephi City Council members he has a concern with a pond that belongs to the South Nephi Irrigation Company which is located in the proposed South Tbwne Estates subdivision. "I have several concerns about the irrigation pond, said George Phillips, Nephi, a member ofthe South Nephi Irrigation Company. The pond had been enlarged and even though plans are to eliminate the spillway it is presently functioning and may continue to do so in the future. "We need to be sure eliminating the spillway will work the From page 3 Clfty tion. DINOSAUR MURAL Nephi Elementary School was the first stop for a mural depicting the Mesozoic era which is traveling to elementary schools throughout Utah. Sponsored by the Utah Museum of Natural History, the project involves using drawings by students that are transferred to the mural then painted. Julie Prince, from the museum, travels to the schools where she teaches students about the Mesozoic era and the art of drawing dinosaurs. Students are selected at random to work on the mural. The mural is due to be completed by the end of February and will be on permanent display at the Museum of Natural History in Salt Lake City. Nephi City Council members authorized the city staff to negotiate a lease and present the proposed lease for council approval in November. White Horse has withdrawn their offer, said Randy McKnight, city administrator. In the meantime. Lion Oil Company refined the proposal they had made to the city council. The items they have refined are those the council suggested in a previous meeting. They have refined the items that were different than those on the form they submitted which they have done to meet city requirements, said McKnight After the final lease of city property is negotiated, said McKnight, the council will have the opportunity to review the proposal and either accept or reject it or some of the items on "It will be ready for council approval in November, said McK- night. From page 4 Vio?2atce ONE DESERVES TO BE ABUSED. Violence is the abusers decision and choice. It is generally motivated by an insecurity or fear of being abandoned. It is accompanied by a feeling of entitlement and desire or expectation to always have ones way. Reporting the abuse may be the only way the abuser will get the help they need. Remember that children are very much impacted by the cycle of violence, and by the various behaviors on the continuum of violence. They deserve to grow up in an environment that is safe. He said, as the council knew, he had done a drainage plan-fothe property where he plans to build homes. Of course, the problem would not show up on the first lots but on future phases of development If all goes as planned, said Phillips, the water problem will be taken care of by the construction the company is doing. Drainage will then not be a concern for Hardy or the city. Water would then back up and would overflow into proper channels. ' Water could flow down the east side of 400 East and the curb and gutter would take care of any r overflow. Phillips explained that when he was a boy, his father took the water west to flow along his property along 600 South, then along 100 East to the current IFA site. Phillips said the old ditch has not cleaned out in some time. No one takes the water in that area might handle tiie flow of water at the south end of the proposed project so there would be no overflow and it might not. We havent completed the headgate, said Phillips. My concern is that everyone needs to be aware that there could be a problem, said Phillips. He said the irrigators had no problem with the subdivision. We think the subdivision is a good idea, he said. However, he said, the pond could be a problem for the subdivision. "It is a problem that could come back to haunt us. Phillips said he was not certain the water project would be completed this fall. Further study of the potential problem will be made and recommendations will also be made. Nephi City Road Shed will be refurbished and cleaned up. Jim Wilkey, council member, said he met with the foreman of the road department and found the road crew and the foreman were anxious to get the building repaired, prepared for winter, and cleaned up. "They need a new water heater and sink and need the toilet repaired, said Wilkey. They would also like to paint The road crews wants to take out the old furnace and not heat the whole building but just the office and break area. "They also need a better welder and a few tools, said Wilkey. I told them that if the items which were being kept at the shed were no good to them or anyone else, they should be thrown away, he said. He is inthe shed. terested in If there are questions about the usefulness of any item, Wilkey said, he had told the supervisor to call the city administrator for ng advice.
