Juab has great numbers out for this season as 95 boys have been going through the preseason workout drills. The conditioning actually began the first week of July with the summer weight lifting program and will conclude next Friday as the Wasps hold their annual inter-squagame. The sophomore vs. freshmen game will begin at 5:00 p.m. with the varsity vs. junior varsity game beginning at 7:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend free of Wasps have been d charge. Of the nine players who return, eight of them played on the defensive side of the ball. Coach Messersmith expects that the defense should again be one of the strengths for the Wasps. Over the past three years, the Wasps have not been blown out semi-final- s. cham-pionshi- C 'i p. . of a single ball game. Returning for the Wasps are safeties Josh Park and TVevor Casper. Each had three interceptions last year and scored over 100 defensive points. Returning at comers are Brett Lovell and Matt Ware. Brett was instrumental in the Wasps defense as he is usually called on to defend the opposing teams best receiver. He recorded two interceptions last year. Matt played both corner and safety for the Wasps and had one interception. On the defensive line, Ryan Warner and Cary an both return. Both big boys give the Wasps great size and strength at about 61, 270 lbs. each. Ryan was third on the team last year with 137 defensive points. The Wasps had two other players who saw good varsity time, senior Mike Howarth and junior Andy Messersmith at linebacker. Mike started the state semi-fingame and led the team in tackles. Andy, as a part-tim- e starter, scored 48 defensive points as a sophomore. Also looking good in preseason drills on defense have been linebackers Mitch Durbin, Brady Kay, and Brett Woodland. Brett missed the last two years because of injuries but has looked especially good during summer workouts. Brady and Mitch did most of their work on the JV. last year but should see plenty of varsity time this year.
