In commemoration of Utahs culturally diverse, pioneering peoples past and present, the Utah Pioneer Sesquicentennial Celebration Coordinating Council honors the history and culture of Utahs Native American community. According to the Utah History Encyclopedia, by the time ofthe arrival of the whites into Northern Utah in the 1840s, there were seven distinct Shoshoni groups. Most were located in ar- eas north of present-da- y Utah.
