Show Serving East Juab County - A Nice Place To Live! Volume 94, No. 53 Tuesday, December 31, 1996 10 and establishes a bounty for Coyotes Where were we a year ago? What issues were important to us? What memorable events took place in 1996? Here are just a few of the highlights from 1996. By Myma Trauntvein Times-New- s Correspondent Juab County Commissioners set the time for the coming years commission meetings at Mondays meeting. Commission meetings, will remain as they have been this past year, said Gordon Young, commission chair. Commission meetings will be held on the first and third Mondays of each month, said Young. The first monthly meeting will be held January Old Orchard Condominiums were going forward, but hit another snag in their plans. Utahs Statehood Centennial is celebrated with a day of festivities on January 6th. It was topped off with a Centennial Ball at 3 p.m. The second meeting will be held at 10 a.m. All meetings fall on Mondays except those which fall on a Monday holiday, said Young. Those meetings will be moved to the Tuesday following the Monday holiday. Juab County Commissioners will pay a bounty to aid with predator control in Juab County from a $2,000 fund they will establish. In particular, coyotes will be the predators targeted by the bounty. Steve Ingram, Robert Steele, Terry Kay and Charles Jenkins met with the commission to make the request. Other counties have similar bounties, said Ingram. For example, Carbon, Sanpete and Emery all have fees which are paid to those who destroy coyotes. Trappers are makingjust $10 to $15 for a coyote pelt, said Steele. The money paid for pelts increases in the winter with the thickness of the fur, but that is the top price. In the summer the price can be lower. at Juab High School. We thought, since we used UDSA commodities, that we should help out," said Nannette Barrett, district food supervisor. In addition, said Barrett, food was sent out to the spill site for the emergency workers and law enforcement officers there. We prepared a snack of soup, a supper, and made 300 sandwiches. Only 45 people were fed breakfast, the rest had gone to homes of local residents, said Barrett. Kelson, in addition to working his arrests were made at Little Sahara. June Serious wild fires break out west of Rocky Ridge; several homes were threatened. The Centennial Wagon Train arrived in Nephi with a parade down Main Street. An encampment, entertainment, food and celebration followed at the Juab County Fairgrounds. Mona Irrigation Company and Mona Town continue a dispute over water. Wildfires continue; Little Sahara is closed; 22,000 acres are burned. See Year on page 2 Such low prices are not much incentive to trappers to seek coyote pelts. A couple of thousand dollars would be a big help, said Steele. There wouldnt be many until next fall. The money could be set aside and paid out of next years budget. Steele said the county commission first saw a need for predator control in 1996. The control helped restore the game in the county thought the primary plan had been to protect the commercial sheep and cattle business. Jenkins, who breeds and raises livestock, said coyotes were the largest cause of loss to those who relied on livestock to provide a living. A fee was collected on every sheep, said Jenkins. The fee, he said, was used to help provide money for the state and federal Animal Control Department (ACD), he said. Locally, many trappers just trap bobcats, said Jenkins. Coyotes are a great problem for those who raise livestock and for the game which lives in the county. They cause a great loss of animals each year, he said. A lot of people think livestock are not important to the state economy," said Jenkins. However, there is a multiplier factor of eight for each, and animals are a renewable resource, he said Not only would such a program be an aid to livestock owners but would be a big benefit to the game in our area," said Gordon Young, commission chair I think such a program would be an excellent idea. Joseph Bernini, commissioner, suggested money for the funding might be taken from the contingency fund. The program, he said, did not exterminate predators but only provide some control for the numbers of animals.
