The road was not shown as a Class B road until 1960, said Brent Dailey. He said he had purchased some of the land from his father. He had also consulted an attorney on his legal rights as far as the road was indicated. The road, he said, which crosses his family property was never deeded to the county. Out of respect for you, said Brent Dailey, we want the road closed in an orderly manner. If I locked the road, you would have to prove your right to use it. There is a highway into the mountains from the Sanpete end of the road. Bruce Martin, who has property in the area, already uses the Sanpete entrance because he lives on the Sanpete end of the road. Sherm Peterson, county road superintendent, said he thought the road should be closed. My recommendation is to pull out, he said. Why should the county maintain a road for a private hunting group? I think we should close the road, chain the entrance, and take out the cattle guard. The road can only be used by me five months of the year, said Jay Dailey. The rest of the time, he said, the road is muddy, frozen, hardened, and has deep ruts. The road is of no value to us most of the year, he said. Jordan Pederson, of Central Utah Water Project, said the road needs to be closed, said Jay Dailey. I should have closed it the road when I talked to Ross Garrett, then a county commissioner, ten years ago. Ike Lunt, county commissioner, said the commission would need to investigate the legality and the steps needed to close the road before they could do any: thing about it. Give us a chance to investigate the legal issues, said Gordon Young, commission chairman. There are people who harass us. There are those who do damage to our property and to wildlife, said Jay Dailey. Weve had enough. Go ahead and do your research, but dont delay. Jay Dailey said the Big Game Department of the Division of Wildlife Resources told him to post his ranch and then patrol it. It would be a full time job, he said. Todays world is not as safe as it was even 10 years ago, said Brent Dailey. He said he was patrolling his road once and was hit by a person he found trespassing. He said the man told him to summon the sheriff and when Dailey pulled out his cellular phone the man jumped in his vehicle and left. I had his license number and vehicle description but the license did not match the truck, which probably meant it was stolen," said Brent Dailey. We s is published each Wednesday by the Utah 84648.
