Not these days, with money tight and too many fashions that look better on the hanger. Its wise to put at least as much thought into choosing a college or university. Before you buy a campus, make sure it fits. Prioritize what is most important to you: Do you want a college that offers intense research opportunities or one that gives you diverse liberal education choices? Do you want to focus on academics or have a more social experience? Do you want the least expense no matter what or will you pay more for a characteristic you cant do without? Study the recruitment materials you receive by mail and decide which campuses might fit basic needs such as proximity, cost, admission requirements, educational opportunities, financial aid, housing and extracurric ular interests. Choose at least three of these campuses to visit. Call the student recruitment office and ask what tours or orientations they can offer you and your parents. If you are interested in honors, student government, sciences, arts or athletics, find out if and when those programs hold special recruitment days. Most schools provide group information sessions and campus tours. Some offer overnight stays and individual meetings. Plan ahead. Some families use summer vacation to look at out schools, but all visits are of-sta-te best made during the regular academic year. Dont visit cam- two large universities. Her first to visit. Do bulletin boards announce activities that interest you? How well kept is the campus? A temporary mess from new construction is usually a sign of institutional health. So, look for good building maintenance, clean grounds, adequate social and study areas, sufficient classroom and lab space, equipment and a well-rulibrary. If you are going to live on campus, ask to see the freshman dormitories or arrange an overnight stay in a residence hall. For 24hours, observe how students divide their time among classes, studying, recreation, meals and social activities.
