Driving Tip Christopher Lynn Sharp and Kristy Lynn Draper From page 4 Parkinsons tremors, you are at very high risk, he notes. Parkinsons occurs when a chemical that regulates nerve cell activity in the brain is no longer produced. Medical testing is available to confirm a Parkinsons diagnosis, but the alcohol test is a good screening step as long as it doesnt lead to excessive drinking, Wasserstein cautions. For essential tremors, a variety of home remedies may give relief, particularly if symptoms are mild. Try avoiding caffeine, and reduce stress by lifestyle changes. If youre suffering from the shakes, you may find that these simple remedies will reduce symptoms to the point where further measures arent necessary, the neurologist says. For the most severe cases, neurosurgical procedures are available: Thalamotomy for essential tremors and pallidotomy for Parkinsons can help a small, select group of patients. Both procedures deactivate the specific part of the brain where the respective tremors start. When traveling on a dirt road, do not follow another vehicle in the dust.
