To check for freshness, Kuhns said to gently pull on several needles. If many come off, the tree is suspect. You can also lift the tree and strike the butt end on the ground. Candles should never be used to light a Christmas tree or wreath. A fresh tree that is watered daily can stay moist and safe for several weeks, he said. Trees used in public buildings shouldnt be displayed for more than 15 days. They should also be treated with a fire retardant solution, he said. Theres not need to worry about old, unattached needles accumulated inside the crown; Though these needles can be messy and a fire hazard, he said they do not indicate a poor tree. They can be easily removed. Once a fresh tree is purchased, keep it outside until you are ready to decorate it.
