They grow rap- idly and produce their edible portion in 25-10- 4-- days. 0 We appreciate vegetables because they are tender uptake of elements, especially phosphorus and potassium. This means there should be adequate supplies of soluble plant food readily available so the young plant will produce early, rapid growth for maximum yields. The first 6 weeks is critical JeJfBanks and crisp or have succulent fruits of various kinds. Plants grown under stress, lacking water and fertility are not as productive nor as desirable to the palate. WHAT DOES MY SOIL CONTAIN? .Most native soils in our area contain rather high levels of potassium. Phosphorus content varies but availability is often low. After lawns, trees and gardens are indiscriminately fertilized for a few years, one or both of these elements may be excessively high. Factors such as soil alkalinity, temperature, organic matter content and microbial activity will influence whether they elements are available to plants when they need them. Nitrogen is readily leached from soil and must be applied each year for high yields. WHAT SHOULD I ADD? Plants require nitrogen in largest quantities. Phosphorus and potassium are vital for leaf, stem and root development, but smaller amounts are needed. All substances sold as fertilizers must have a guaranteed analysis. This analysis is expressed as a percent plant food content. For example, a fertilizer contains 16 nitrogen, 16 phosphate and 8 potash. Minor elements used by veg 16-16- -8 for phosphorus and potassium uptake. Nitrogen may be supplied later in the season. Adding the other two elements later does little good since as the soil warms they are available insufficient quantities. BAND APPLICATION. A small quantity of soluble nutrients at planting time into which roots of young plants can grow will encourage early vigorous growth. Make a trench 3 inches deep' with the comer of a hoe. Use 13 to cup of a fertilizer such as per 10 ft. Row. Form the seed furrow at the proper depth for the vegetable approximately 2 inches above and 2 inches to the side of the fertilizer. Dont permit the seeds to contact the fertilizer. Weeds between the rows wont be encouraged so much with banded fertilizer. supply 10 lbs. Of ammonium sulfate per 1,000 sq. Ft. for each 1 inch depth of sawdust, leaves, ' V '' :; straw, etc.- $ " DURING DRESSING SIDE THE SEASON. About a month after planting, supplemental ni-- ; trogen may be required as shown by plants pale green or yellow color. This may be supplied by cup ammonium sulfate, 13 cup ammonium nitrate, or 14 cup urea per 10 ft. Of row. Repeat this application if corn, pole beans, or other long season crops show a need. Nitrogen will leach' from well drained, sandy . readily . . Page 13 Nephi, Utah Wqt, -- soils. Apply one-hathese amounts on a more frequent lf schedule. Tomatoes may produce an excess of foliage and a shortage of ripe tomatoes if they receive too much extra nitrogen. Simply scatter the fertilizer near the plants before a sprinkler irrigation. You dont need to dig it ini With flood irrigation, place the fertilizer along the fiirrow near the shoulder before turning in the water. With EARLY DETECTION and prompt treatment, 90 2 Program. The unique program, first proposed to the Board of Big Game Control last winter by organized Utah sportsmen, will provide big game hunters who enroll with far more hunting op- portunity than the average hunter. In turn, Dedicated Hunters will pay a fee, complete DWR courses in hunter ethics and basic wildlife management annually and volunteer at least eight hours a year to conservation or. wildlife management service projects designated by the DWR. Hunters who cannot perform the eight hours of volunteer service each year may buy out of the requirement by paying an additional annual fee. We think this new program will encourage hunter ethics and really get Utah hunters more involved in wildlife management throughout the state, says DWR Director Bob Valentine. and Friday. 9 a.m. Includes everything but the wife and kids. 5555 North Maple, Orem, Utah YARD SALE Thursday its all gone. i - t (te!a$3.56 fez c? to 25 6 YARD SALE SIGNS Under the program, hunters this year will pay a fee of $125 to enroll in a hour class in ethics and wildlife management, taught jointly by hunter education instructors and wildlife biologists. Upon completion, theyll get a certificate of registration in the program and a hunter handbook. Then theyll buy a general season deer tag for $30 this year only. For the next two years, they'll automatically receive a deer tag for the same region. In 1996 and thereafter, new hunters entering the program will pay just one fee and their deer tags will be sent to them automatically. Dedicated hunters may hunt in all three general seasons (rifle, archery and muzzleloader); they wont have to choose a season like other hunters. They may harvest two deer over a three year period, during which they may participate in up to nine separate deer hunting seasons.
