Utah swine producers need to shut the door BEFORE they let a virus in. The virus, Porcine Respiratory and Reproductive Syndrome (PRRS), so far has not shown up in Utah. However, most of the states report many of their herds now infected with PRRS, said Dr. Clell Bagley, Utah State University Extension veterinarian. Many Utah producers obtain breeding animals from some of these swine states, he said. They could be bringing home a load of trouble along with the purchased pigs. swine-producin- g Pigs suffering from PRRS show clinical signs of either respiratory or reproductive problems. It is spread by very close contact including contact with semen even semen used in artificial insemination (AI) programs, he said. The disease has only been known for three years. In this time it has been identified worldwide in all major swine producing areas. It tends to be a much greater problem in areas with Cost for the program will be This repre$27.00 sents less than 50 percent of the retail price of patches. The $20 registration fee usually required for the Fresh Start course will be waived for this project. Those eligible for the program must be smokers (no chewers); at least 18 years old; female; be able to attend all six weekly Fresh Start classes; smoke heavily; and heavy swine populations, cannot be pregnant nor nursing, Bagley said. Diagnosing PRRS is not always although pregnant and nursing mothers can attend the Fresh easy, but it can be diagnosed with Z Z a blood serum test or with selected tissues in cases of abortion. Only a few diagnostic laboratories in the United States can do these tests, he said. A new vaccine is available but has not yet been used widely. It is for prevention of the respiratory form of the disease and can only be given to pigs under 18 weeks of age, he said. For Utah producers, it is critical that most of their herds if not all, remain free of this virus, Bagley said. Replacement swine should come from herds that are free of PRRS. Even then, the blood should be tested at purchase, isolated after purchase, and then retested. If either of these tests are positive for PRRS, they should not be introduced into the home herd, he said. Similar standards should be applied to any semen purchased for AI use, he said. Herds or specific boars that do not test negative in a blood test should not be used. Many swine areas are debating how to best deal with the disease, he said. Since we dont have it in Utah, that makes our choice relatively simple keep it out. If we dont do that, swine production in Utah will become more complicated and less r See us for all your advertising needs, flyers, posters, or display ads ADVERTISING WORKS FOR YOU . 96 South Main, Nephi 623-052- 5 I |
