SEPTEMBER 6 - OCTOBER 4 OCTOBER 25 - NOVEMBER 22 Great-grandmoth- A recent survey commissioned by the Utah Department of Health found that parents have many reasons for not immunizBut just ing their because a child has a runny nose or is taking antibiotics doesnt mean you should delay getting shots for your child, said Doug Vilnius, director of the Division of Community Health Services.' The survey, in a nutshell, said Vilnius, tells us that parents know immunizations are important but that parents find our system a little confusing and from childhood diseases would be a lot easier if one visit and one shot did the job, but until then all of us, especially parents, have to make the extra effort to immunize on time. The statewide telephone survey was conducted earlier this summer by the University of Utah Survey Research Center. It was reviewed by the divisions Health Education Evaluation Program. The survey involved interviews with 603 parents of Utah It measured immunization levels and ex- plored what factors influence parents to immunize their chil dren. The survey found that only 57.7 percent of Utahs children are folly immunized by 2 years of age. The survey asked why children had not been immunized. Many parents 62 percent of them mistakenly believed their children were already fully immunized. Parents often failed to use the handy immunization card to let them know when the next immunization should occur. Cost ofimmunizations was not an issue for most parents. The survey also found that parents are most likely to seek information about immunizations from private physicians. This will be a starting point for us, said Vilnius. For example, reminders from doctors seem to be very effective in motivating parents. Jackie Leavitt, chair of the Every Child By Two Immunization Task Force, said the survey provides a solid foundation for creating a variety of immunization programs to help parents get their children immunized on time. Vilnius agreed. There is no one easy answer, he said. There is no single group that we can easily target for education pro . ninnS , Tracy Taylor 623-216- Contimted on page 5 . . lOITI M Member 'df theGFWO 21st Century Club and Delphic Literary Club have officially combined to form one club dedicated to community service, the-GFW- personal enrichment and cultural growth.
