Four basic messages will be conveyed to all consumers: Daily Values serve as a reference for dietary guidance. They help consumers understand how much of a nutrient they should eat at a minimum (say for fiber or calcium) or maximums (fat and cholesterol). The Daily Val- ues are listed for people who eat approximately 2000 calories a day (many older adults, children and sedentary women) or 2500 calories a day (active men, teenage boys and very active women). People use labels in many different ways. Whether a consumer wants to use the label to calculate hisher nutrient intake, or to just make a quick product comparison, the new labeling system is geared to help accomplish this. Look and you may see. . . Bobcats in Utah j Bobcats are found throughout North America. They particularly like Utah because of the excellent habitat, climate, and abundant food supply. Youre going to find bobcats in areas with a high degree of cover like big sagebrush, breaks in the rocks for hiding, a sunny platform to warm up and look at their world, says DWR mammals coordinator Boyd can believe the claims on the package. You will be table to believe the descriptor terms that say a food is low in 1.- You fat or the health claims that link a certain nutrient to a specific disease because government Blackwell. regulations now define and regulate the terms and claims. 2. You can more easily com- pare products because serving sizes will be more comparable for similar food products. For the first time, virtually all processed and packaged products will have to contain nutrition information. The information on the label will reflect an average serving in amounts cus- tomarily consumed. Since the serving size for each product is defined in the regulations, product comparisons will be easier and more meaningful than previously. 3. For one-hal- comparison, a cougar paw print averages three to five inches across. Bobcats require very little water or moisture to survive. They get nearly all of their necessary fluids from their prey Blackwell stated. They can kill one, maybe two rabbits per night, and go two months without drinking any water. Because of their nature and nocturnal behavior, bobcats are difficult to count. Utah is one of only a few states with stringent harvest regulations. Only five bobcat permits per hunter are allowed each year. We have a check-i- n procedure hunters must follow when they get their bobcat. We log the sex and age of the animal, look at the general conditions, and so on, Blackwell remarked. If we see too many female cats in the harvest, then we would be concerned with the direction ofthe population. With a controlled number of animals being taken, they do very well in Rabbits are the preferred prey for bobcats, so they go where the rabbits go. Its not likely that a bobcat would wander into backyards and neighborhoods. Like their larger cousins the cougar, bobcats do not like humans. You would be very lucky to see one during the day, says Blackwell. Pursuing one of these animals, standing nearly as tall as a medium sized dog, is not easy. With their exceptional eyesight, these cats see us long before we see them. But you may see signs of these animals as you walk and hike the west desert and other suitable habitat. More Hardware Ranch contests A Las Vegas company is calling Utahns with news that they have won cash prizes, reports the Better Business Bureau of Utah. For a donations of $920 or more, Utahns can enter a prize award contest to win up to $50,000. United Holdings Group of Las Vegas is soliciting people across the county to supposedly raise funds for a charitable foundation. A United Holdings Group representative informed the Bureau that the money collected is a contribution, not an entry fee. The money is collected for the Express Line Foundation, also of Las Vegas. The Better Business Bureau of Las Vegas reports that Express Line Foundation has not responded to the Bureaus requests for information. A senior couple in Brigham City contacted the Bureau after United Holdings called three different times. The couple said they were told they could win one of several prizes worth up to $50,000. However, the companys representative required that they send a $920 contribution via overnight courier service to enter the contest. The solicitor claimed that the money would be used for senior handicapped services, soup kitchens and home meals services. United Holdings Group responded to the Bureaus inquiry by saying that contributions are not required to enter the contest. One of the prizes offered in the promotion is a $25,000 Gold Rush. When questioned by the Bureau, the companys representative indicated that the Gold Rush included diamonds, gold or bonds with a face value of up to $25,000. Government bonds with a face value of $25,000 and a twenty-fiv- e year maturity can be purchased for much less than the contribution amount Utahns who receive a sweep-stake- s notice by mail or by phone should contact the BBB.
