Mr. Freston quoted Mr. Wilde as saying that he had to pay his attorney another $3,000 up front in order to continue on with the case, and he did not want to go forth if a settlement could be arranged. Sheriff Carter, in the same executive commission TN is meeting, said that he had encouraged Mr. Wilde to settle because if the case went to court, a lot of peoples reputations would be hurt. No entry was made in the open session of the commission meeting (in early June) as to the content of the executive session pertaining to this matter. Mr. Freston and Sheriff Carter, a day or two later, drove to Salt Lake City and approached the trust. Several days after I heard what Mr. Freston and Sheriff Carter had done, I realized that the Utah Local Governments Trust was going to take their advice and arrange an settlement. My motion for summary judgement had, by now, been pending before the court for about a year and I insisted that it should be heard and pursued to the end. I told the trust that under no circumstances did I want them to settle out of court with Mr. Wilde. I put this in writing and sent it to them. Since I used to enjoy going up the canyon to picnic and relax, I say it now is broke and needs fixing. I believe that the forest service did do a good job of administering the canyon for some ' years, but philosophy in the government is changing and the feelings of the local people have been ignored. Mistrust has replaced the respect that used to exist. Dale Worwood tells me that Mr. Sensiabugh, the representative of the forest service in this area, said on several occasions that it was the forest services intention to place a gate up Salt Creek Canyon and to1 charge for the privilege of going through. I hope that Commissioner Brough can be treated fairly by the press, by our local elected officials, by those who protect our rights and uphold the laws made for our protection, and by those running for office in our county. I, for one, believe that he has not been treated as such in the past, and that is a sad situation in our community.
