Show Round three Society notes Moire To the Editor: I would like to tell Superintendent Wright how much I en- ort) binsnim joyed his letter to the editor last week. I appreciate the time he has taken the past year to answer my questions and for arranging my meeting with the state transportation supervisor. Mistakes do happen. In 1981, I measured the distance to the school from my house to the north door by the kindergarten where the sign said, No parkI didnt ing, loading zone. know that the bus stopped on the west side of the school. As I have studied other bus routes in the district, I have found that others also have goofed up on distances and eligibility. Several years ago, Nephi Elementary had staggered sessions for first and second Here's what's cooking for school lunch Tauney Kendall is Miss Teen for Utah All-Americ- an grades. The west fields children were supervised and waited at the school for an hour before the school bus took them home. The Mona Elementary route is an round trip each day. If all children rode one bus in from Allred Hill, the elementary children would need to be supervised for approximately 40 minutes a day. The transportation supervisor made a big deal about saving the state money when he cut some eight to 10 miles off the d west 100 percent fields bus route in 1986. If he were truly interested in saving the state of Utah money, wouldnt he also cut out the Mona elementary bus? Are we sacrificing the west fields children under the guise of economics? It is a state law that children go to school. Busing is a service provided by the state to bring children to school. 18-mi- le state-approve- The district uses an You may be interested to know that the state sends money to Juab School District for each eligible child regardless of whether or not that child rides the school bus. If a child is eligible and the state will pay for the bus route, why does Juab School District care if the bus goes to his house? It seems to me that we should do all we can to fill up these expensive school buses. Let me explain some of the ways that ineligible children can ride school buses. School buses can make one stop within the limit if the stop is right on the route and there is room on the bus. For example: The other day, I counted 18 children get off the west fields mile-and-a-ha- lf bus at the elementary school. That meant that the bus was only half full when it left the high school. More elementary children can get on at the high school and also the bus can make one stop on 4th East and the state still will pay for it. Children even can stand in the aisles, but no ineligible child can make an eligible child stand for him to sit down. When the Mona Elementary bus comes into Mona in the morning from Allred Hill, it is only half full. It can make one stop and not be penalized. If it stops more than once, then that portion of the route is paid for by Juab School District. bus to run 17 Levan kindergarten children Three years ago, home each Tauney Jocelyn Kendall, 14, Here is the lunch menu for the schoolday. sold the district of Bruce and Linda daughter schools in the Juab District for west fields school bus, Kendall of Mona, has been previous Oct.
