Show Kathy's Corner Avoiding holiday blues by Kathy Riggs USU Extension Home Agent Many adults have learned ly to enjoy the Christmas holidays, while others find themselves in a state of depression, or at least frus- ect. Some researchers have found that housework serves as a carrier activity while important communication among family members takes place. A lot of meaningful discussions have taken place over dishes, dusting, etc. While family members are cleaning out that closet for Mom, repainting the basement playroom, or washing windows, theyre also talking about issues and in ways they might not dare to use in other situations. It can also get those chores done for Mom and Dad which are otherwise put off! Make a gift together. While the family is together, make a present.' Have each of the siblings bring pictures of themselves and their own families, and build a collage of these pictures to give Mom and Dad. This type of present involves the entire family and would add greatly to the family picture gallery. Another idea for a family gift is to rent videotape equipment and make a videotape of all family members., These can be duplicated so that each sibling has one. A videotape of Mom and Dad talking about when each of their children were young is also a terrific present. As well as being hilarious, it will also let your own children know that you were a kid once, ful- tration, until things are back Kathy Riggs to normal. That state of normalcy may not come until several weeks after Christmas. Dr, Jean E. Edmondson and Dr. Tom Lee, Extension specialists in family and human development at Utah State University, offer suggestions to make the most of Christmas and beat y blues. the Dr. Edmondson suggests that even though families are tied together by family bonds, when the group only gets together for holidays or special occasions, there can be a great behavior deal of surface without much depth. To ease the tensions of your next family you might: Express an interest in .others. Ask relatives what their recent hobbies are, how the jobs going, or if they have any new interests. A lot of the initial awkwardness you may feel in talking to them is because you dont really know that much about your relatives. If you initiate the contact, they will feel that you care about them and are interested enough to find out about each of them. After the stress of the holidays is gone and we relax, we can feel let down. Loss. Feelings of sadness are often associated with the loss of something. In this case, it could be the loss of looking forward to Christmas and the holidays. When the day arrives, we may feel a sense of loss over having Please turn to page 4 work better than games which include competition or special skills. The family could decide to go for a nature walk or play in the snow. Another family game is Secrets. Each person writes down a secret about themselves and places the paper in a box. Then each family member draws out a slip and reads it aloud. The object is to guess who wrote the secret. Reminisce about family history. Each family has some special memories or family history. Even children like to remember when they were long-awaite- d even last year. younger, Reminiscing by saying reDo you member when. . still like to. . helps to build bridges between family members. It can also give insights for as to how your family worked as you were growing up. Sometimes you might even remember a family tradition. It could be as simple as a Dad cooks evening, Friday night popcorn, or taking turns making Saturday breakfast. With all the chaos and stress involved in going home for the holidays its an added bonus to feel comfortable and relaxed with relatives. Any way you can learn more about each other, talk over special memories, or engage in joint projects will help to ease some awkward moments and may make your holidays even more enjoyable than normal.
