Show Does your child hear everything he should?? by Darrell Jensen School speech pathologist Are you hearing everything you should? Is your school-agechild hearing everything the teacher is saying? Is your preschool child hearing everything necessary to develop good speech and language? These are questions we all should be asking ourselves since hearing is so vital to our academic and social structure. Researchers have found that a child, while yet in the womb, can hear the environmental sounds exposed to the mother. The child responds positively to pleasant sounds such as soft music, calm talking, etc.; and d responds negatively to loud, annoying sounds, such as loud, abuse music, screaming, etc. The critical age for learning speech and language skills is from birth to approximately 5 years of age. It is very important, therefore, that the child has adequate hearing during that time period. This always present a difficult dilemma, because during that time period, some children experience frequent middle-ea- r problems which are usually accompanied by a hearing loss. It is also a time when its very difficult to test and identify hearing problems. Because of these problems, most parents are unaware of any problems until the preschool screening in the spring of every year. By that time the child is almost 5 years old. Its very important, therefore, for parents to be alert for any . who doesnt use a three-wor- d his head toward sounds by four child utterance and is 100 perto six months of age, a child the age of 3 who doesnt imitate sounds by cent intelligible by nine to 11 months, a child who years. doesnt produce first words by The Times-New- s who child a 4 months, Nephi, Utah utdoesnt use a October 25, 1.984 terance by the age of two, a 12-1- 6 two-wor- d VOTERS OF JUAB COUNTY!
