Others have concerns about methods of applying the water and whether or not sprinkler irrigation will cause disease in garden crops. A sprinkler irrigation system should be able to do an adequate job of irrigating yards and gardens in the city. In fact, if it is properly designed, it will do a much better job with much less water. Almost any crop or plant can be grown under a sprinkler irrigation system. Ive seen yards and gardens in other communities with pressurized systems where there is a beautiful job of gardening being done. It is much easier to maintain the landscape and avoid weed and other problems with the sprinkler system than it is with a . ditch system. True, it will take some time and expense to put in a properly designed system, but it will be well worth the money. If sprinkler irrigation is not properly used, it may cause more disease problems than furrow irrigation. If the garden is sprinkled every day, for example, it may maintain a humid environment which may encourage disease and may prevent fruit set on tomatoes. : Duane Hatch, Extension hor- from Salt Lake recommends applying County, one to two inches of water; to the garden early in the morning every four or five days or; at longer intervals if possible.' If this is done, he says, there will not be any more chance for disease problem than there was with furrow irrigation and there will be no problem with fruit set. ticulturist irIf you have a rigation system, however, there will be no problems of either drip-trickl- e kind. Low pressure, ir- drip-trickl- e' rigation systems do an excellent job of placing the water right where it is needed for m plant growth, and yet use very little water. There are a number of irrigation equipment suppliers in the area who can supply the equipment you would need for a system and there ;are some of them who will even contract to put in the system, for you. You may want to consider it. If you want more information on this type of irrigation, stop in and see me at the Exten; drip-trick- le sion office. PRUNING SPRING-FLOWERIN- G SHRUBS . Now is the time to start pTun-in- g many of the shrubs which have bloomed. Generally, the large old wood of lilac, forsythia, snowball, bridle wreath, and many other spring-flowerin- g plants should be pruned to the ground. This will keep the plant back down to size. You can do additional pruning if needed and cut off . the remains of the old blossoms. There are several reasons for cutting the old wood to the ' ground. One reason is that the plants spring-flowerin- g bloom on the wood that grew last year. If you just keep getting the branches grow, pretty sooon all the bloom is out on the end of the branches and may be way high in the air with a lot of dead or unsightly wood below. If you take out the old wbod, then you have the younger, hew wood coming which puts on more blossoms. : : The lilac borer infests the wood of lilacs that are over five years old. If you take out the wood that is five years old and older, then you wont have the problem with the lilac borer.
