Yes, its possible, say specialists at Utah State University, but they re mind parents that certain conditions must be met. Parents must want to make both the garden and the rela d certainly helps if a good parent-chil- d relationship already exists. Consider the demands. The gardener must have patience and an ample supply of time and energy. He must exert the will to answer countless questions and be able calmly to han- - tionship with the child grow. Both parent and child must become interested in gardening. The chances of success are diminished if parents have to coerce, threaten, or punish children to get them to participate in the garden project. It These . types of ants, according to Timothy P. Miller, Extension entomologist at Utah State University. Millions of individuals are bitten or stung by insects each year in the United States. Luckily, the vast majority of people suffer only localized, short-terreactions, Miller says. A normal reaction consists of some pain (usually immediate) and localized reddening and swelling of the tissue followed by itching. These symptoms generally disappear in a matter of hours to a day or two, he says. Unfortunately, some persons are allergic to one or more of the components of insect venom or saliva, and Miller says estimates run as high as 17 percent of the population are allergic with 1 percent severly so. An allergic reaction typicalinvolves the production of ly in symptoms tissues or systems removed from the immediate area of the injury, Miller ex-- . plains. These symptoms may include nausea, increased heart rate, decreased blood pressure, sweating, hives, dizziness, difficulty in breathing, abdominal pain, and tightness in the throat and chest. A severe reaction can result in anaphylactic shock which can cause death if not treated rapdily. To reduce the possibility of being stung, Miller advises: Keep garbage cans clean and covered, do not permit pet food to sit outdoors for extended periods, keep picnic foods covered until they are ready to be eaten, and harvest garden and orchard products in a timely manner to prevent the accumulation of overripe fruit. Many types of stinging insects are attracted to food odors from these sources. When gardening or doing yard work, take care not to disturb nests of stinging insects and avoid areas where bees are working flowers. Use caution when working in areas that might harbor hidden nests such as trees, hedges, rubbish piles, and vines clinging to structures, the specialist advises. Cosmetics,. lotions, and suntan products will also attract some types of stinging insects and these products should be avoided by sensitized persons. "Dark clothing, bright colors, and prints tend to attract more stinging insects than do light colored clothing. Avoid loose fitting clothing that may allow stinging insects to enter and become trapped, resulting in multiple stings. Do not go barefoot. Wear shoes rather than open footwear such as sandals, Miller cautions. Insect repellents offer protection against mosquitoes and other biting flies, and the majority contain or Deet. Check the label before you buy. The higher the percentage of Deet, the greater the degree of protection, Miller says. He adds that protection is enhanced if the repellent is also applied to your clothing. Reapplication is usually required if you get wet or perspire heavily. If, in spite of all precautions, you are bit or stung, Miller advises, clean the site thoroughly with soap and water and avoid scratching the area. Secondary infection caused by scratching is a frequent occurrence and can lead to severe complications. Topical applications of ammonia, baking soda paste, or commercial antiseptics will provide some temporary relief of pain and itching. Ammonia is also available in some commercial insect bite and sting products. Localized swelling can be reduced with cold packs, he says. Honeybee stings pose a specific problem, says Miller. The honeybees stinger is barbed. When the bee stings, and pulls away, it leaves the stinger and poison sac in place. If not removed, the poison will continue to be injected through the stinger into the skin. The stinger should be carefully removed by scraping with a knife or fingernail. Avoid crushing or squeezing the attached poison sac to prevent injecting more, venom, he says. Persons who have experienced an allergic reaction to an insect sting or bite should consult their physician. Immunizations are available for some insect venoms that will gradually increase an individuals tolerance to the specific toxin.
