Show 4-- seeks exchange H students for Japan When Utahns are Juab boarding planes with international destinations next summer, some area youngsters may be among them as a member of the Utah Exchange program. So says Kathy Riggs, La Leche The County Extension home agent. In Japan, each young person will live for about four weeks with a host family. They will be treated just as any other family member would be, working and playing beside their Japanese host parents, brothers, and sisters. In many instance, the exchange students will see parts of Japan besides the area of their host home, such as Tokyo, Kyoto, and Nara. The latter two are cities of the past. Kyoto was the cultural center in 794, and Nara, the oldest capital of Japan, houses advantages of breastfeeding', will be the topic of discussion at the December meeting of La Leche League. These were some of the facts reported by the Utah Foundation in its annual analysis of teacher salaries in Utah. The beginning salary for a teacher in the Juab School District this year is $13,650. The salary schedule includes regular increases for experience and added academic training. Thus, ex- perienced teachers with masters degrees will receive up to $23,457 per year in the Juab district during the 1982-8- 3 teacher with five years of five-salar- crease than the beginning salary for a teacher. Foundation analysts explain that all of the annual salaries for teachers listed above are for 5 teaching days, or about nine months of actual service. Teachers with special duties and those who teach summer classes receive added compensation. In addition to the salary increases provided, several Utah school districts this year began paying all or a portion of the 3.95 percent retire180-18- ment contribution formerly paid by the employee. Millard and Washington school districts paid the entire 3.95 percent in behalf of their employees, while the Ogden School District paid 66 percent of the employee share. In effect, this action con- - study also in- dicates that if a teacher who began teaching in the Utah schools five years ago had acquired added academic training, he would have received an ever greater salary boost during the period. school year. For the state as a whole, the starting salary for a teacher with a bachelors degree averages $13,682, with beginning salaries ranging from $12,659 in the Ogden School District, to $16,510 in the Emery School District. The average maximum salary for a teacher in Utah with a masters degree this year is $23,854, or about 74 percent more Founda- and are Service continurequire- concerned and deepening understanding through homestay procross-cultur- grams, says ing Miss 4-- H the youth of ments to retain active three years.
