The Times-New- s "COME fcfcCK." C.AKI Forget about messing around with old drums. What you want to build your homemade stove out of is a discarded electric water heater tank. That's what Iowa native Robert Smyers told us when we were looking for a homebuilt woodstove design that would drum heaters that most improve on the usual people put together. Our search for an alternative was sparked by the fact that barrels don't usually produce very efficient or attractive stoves . . . and are increasingly difficult to find. Smyers gave us at least four good reasons why water heater tanks were better for the purpose. For one thing, the walls of such containers are at least three barrels . . . times as thick as are those of which means that a water heater drum will make a stove. much tougher and longer-lastinFurthermore, when you build a firebox from a junked water heater tank, its relatively easy to make the stove as airtight and efficient as any $500 woodburner on the market. Besides that, if you follow Roberts plan, your heater will be easy to load, it will have excellent fire and temperature control, and itll look classy enough to put on display right in the living room. And finally, you can build a water heater stove for even less than most folks now spend putting together a woodburner. As a matter of fact, Robert built our test model for less than $35, and it took him and his brother Emerson only six hours to make it. It really isnt difficult to find discarded water heater tanks, either. Most of the landfills scattered around the country, in fact, are filled with such containers. Any trashed electric (forget the gas units for this project) water heater of 30- - to capacity will convert nicely into a stove. Frankly, we dont have room here to give you complete instructions for constructing our woodstove. But anyone with a cutting torch and welder should find the job pretty easy. And if you dont own or operate such equipment, scout around until you find a competent welding shop that'll convert your tank at a reasonable price. The free reprint mentioned at the end of this article will give you detailed information on adding the legs, the loading hopper box with hinged lid, the exhaust stack, and the draft control. As an inexpensive, attractive homebuilt heater, its your best bet. g n For FREE additional iniormation on building MOM'S woodburning stove or on THE MOTHER EARTH NEWS magazine, send your name and address to Doing MORE . . with LESS!, care ot this paper. SIMPLE HOMEMADE TOYS Here are a few toys that can occupy snowbound little ones long enough for you to catch your breath or finish up the chores. The simple, but effective, spool racer is a good plaything to start out with. You'll need a large wooden spool if you can find one . . . plastic just doesn't make it! You'll also need a dowel or stick 3 inches long, a large bead (bigger than the spools hole), a strong rubber band, and two small nails. Turn the spool on end and drive the two nails into the wood on opposite sides of its central hole . . . leaving enough of each nail exposed to hold the rubber band. Wrap the band around the nails, thread it through the cylinder and then through the bead, and slip the dowel through the protruding rubber loop. Then simply wind the rubber-banmotor, place the toy on a smooth surface, and watch it go! Another plaything, the come back can, may be easily constructed if you simply tie a rubber band through holes punched about an inch or two apart in the center of the bottom and lid of a tin can (a plastic-toppecoffee can will work just fine). Then knot a short length of string to the middle of the elastic and fasten a fishing sinker, a small stone, or some other weight to the cord. The toy will boomerang back to its original position whenever it's rolled! And, to make Grandmas finger trap, cut a 6" X 12 piece of heavy paper and make two 8 lengthwise slits, about 2" apart, down the middle. Then, starting at the slitted end, roll the paper into a f tube with an inside diameter of approximately inch, glue the joint, let it dry . . . and tell someone that you want him or her to help you with a magic trick. Ask your assistant to stick both index fingers into the tube. Then ask him or her to pull them out. And, finally, listen to your victim howl when that proves all but impossible! Heres just one more . . . the hummer button. All you need is string, large buttons, and two lengths of rounded wood for the handles. Make holes 1 inch from each handle end. Thread the holes in the handles and the buttons with string so the buttons are in the middle . . . between the two handles. Twist the string tightly, and when the handles are pulled apart the buttons will spin and hum. y easy-to-mak- inhibit and funds, 14-inc- h Catalog Sales Agency d . 220 North Main Mona, Utah old-tim- e For FREE additional MOTHER EARTH Doing MORE . . . 551: "Toy Book. information on homemade toys or on THE magazine, send your name and address to With LESS', care of this paper Ask for Reprint No NEWS Would Nov. 12, 1981 MONTGOMERY WARD PHONE i You Nephi, Utah 5 d one-hal- Merchant!
