July 12, 1979 Nephi will become one of the entertainment hotspots of Utah today as the 45th Ute Stampede gets under way. The excitement continue through Saturday. The citys summer celebration is built around three will top-flig- rodeos which begin at 8 p.m. each day in the county fairgrounds arena. The rodeos are sanctioned the Professional Rodeo Association. Cowboys The rodeos will be produced by Nephis Ute Stampede Committee and Cotton Rossers Flying U rodeo stock and production comby pany. Besides saddle and Stampede queens and attendants from past years. The Ute Stampedes Mammoth parade will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday. It will feature floats, bands, and marching groups from around the state. The parade is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club. The last of the Stampede parades is the annual bathing beauty parade at 4 p.m. Saturday. It is sponsored by the Lions Club. The Nephi Lions also will cook and serve breakfast at the city park tomorrow and Saturday mornings beginning at 6:30. Just before todays western parade, the gun will sound to start the 2nd Ute Stampede road race. Competing runners will race over a 4.1 mile loop, which includes part of the parade route. The race has several divisions, including an overall section and a couples division. Registration will begin at 5 p.m. in front of the county courthouse and the race will start at 5:45. Mini-Maratho- Golfers, too, will find something to interest them in the Ute Stampede celebration as the Ute Stampede Amateur gets underway at 9 a.m. on Saturday at the Canyon Hills Golf Course. bareback bronc riding, steer wrestling, calf roping, girls barrel racing, and bull riding there will be several comedy and specialty acts. Its a part of every July to the residents of East Juab County! Its Nephis big annual celebration that is shared by the good folks of Levan, Leamington, Payson, Provo, Gunnison, Richfield, and lots of other friends from throughout the state. The Ute Stampede is the western parade on opening day when members of the Nephi-NebPosse host the riding clubs and mounted posse members from several area of central and south-centrUtah in a colorful display .of trained horses in drills and for-- . o mations. ' The Ute Stampede is the colorful costumes and outfits used by the riders from bright reds to subdued hues of grey, from pinks and greens to purples and blues. Ute Stampede Committee President Leo Osborne said some of the real toughs of the rodeo world will be in town during the Stampede to compete for prize money. For instance, Paul Tierney of Rapid City, S.D., who is second on a recent PRCA cowboy list, will be here. Tierney is fourth on the calf roping list and 12th in the steer wrestling standings. Also entered are Lyle Sankey, of Augusta, Kans., third on the list, first in the bull riding standings and 14th on the saddle bronc list; Bruce Ford, Evans, Colo., first on the bareback bronc list; and Don Gay of Mesquite, Texas, second bull rider on the list. And a Utah cowboy, Mickey Young of Ferron, will check in on the action. Young is fifth on the bareback bronc list. But theres more going on besides rodeoing. The City of Fun Carnival will be going strong all three afternoons and evenings in the area east of the arena. And at six this afternoon, the first of three parades along Nephis Main Street will begin. Todays parade, sponsored by the Nephi Nebo Posse, will feature western horses and riders. City, county meet A delegation from Nephi City conferred with the Juab County Commission Monday to seek answers to five questions. Mayor J. Barres Jenkins, City Manager Ted Anderson and Councilman Fenton Broadhead attended the commissions regular meeting in the county courthouse. The city contracts with the county sheriff's department for office space in the county public safety building and for the housing of city prisoners in the county jail. Rent on the office space is $30 per month and the prisoner fees, under a recently negotiated contract, are $4 for booking costs and $18 per piisoner per day for housing costs. The city officials said they were not complaining about the rent or prisoner costs. But they said they hoped the city's contribution to Juab County would receive more acknowledgement from the county. "Were not asking for anything for nothing, just some consideration, the mayor said. "Wed like to feel that we are part of the county. Were working for the same people." At the same time, Jenkins sought to make it clear that he felt relations were friendly. "Jack Ludlow, owner of a local lumber and concrete company, will trade his cement truck for a horse during the next three days after being named Grand Marshal for this years Ute Stampede. A longtime Nephi resident, Ludlow came to town in 1947 to work at Nephi Lumber. He later bought controlling interest in the concern and added concrete to the products offered by the firm. He and two sons now operate the business. He has been active in church and community affairs.
