Show mmvmvume nm From East Juab County!!! Get a good view of stars tonight EAST by Ruseell K. Jackson The fireworks of the Fourth may be over, but thats no reason to stop looking at the night sky The stars and planets seen in the skies over the East Juab County area can be just as exciting as any display. The summer sky is a good one to watch for several reasons: it is pleasant outside at night and the summer sky is generally cloudless. This week should be especially good because man-mad- e the moon is new and wont flood the sky with light, and, according to Bruce Howard, a staff member at the Hansen Planetarium in Salt Lake City, most of the major planets will be congregating in the western or southwestern sky. Venus, Mars, and Saturn will be close together in the southwest for a few hours after sunset. In fact, Venus and Saturn will almost appear to collide on July 10, Howard said. e i WEST Venture out tonight at take this star map with you. Star gazing has been practiced from the beginning of time. It can be fascinating. iyl Another planet, Mercury, is visible in the western sky immediately after the sun goes down, but is rather difficult to spot. f8 Venus can easily be seen with the unaided eye. Howard said the planetarium gets several calls a night from people reporting the planet to be a UFO. 0 Some of the other planets can also be viewed without optics, but a good pair of binoculars or a small telescope will greatly enhance the experience. After the planets have set, theres still plenty to see in the sky. Several very bright stars are there, along with some beautiful star clusters and, maybe the most interesting sight of all, the Milky Way. Probably the brightest star now visible, said Howard, is Regulus, in the constellation of Leo. By the way, Regulus will be very close to Venus by the midle of the month. DEVON Howard said he envied people who live away from the lights of the metropolitan areas. You feel almost Lke you can reach out and touch some of these stars," he said, referring to viewing conditions easily available in Juab or neighboring valleys.
