Show News and views from your county agent . . . Corn trials, hydatid clinic, drip irrigation are this week's topics by Blaine Jones In last weeks column, mentioned that I hoped to have a corn variety trial established. Well, we made it. Paul Daniels, USU L I - .v.tT Extension ronomist came Blaine Jones Ag- - -- down and we worked with Rob- ert Shepherd on putting out a trial that included 19 different varieties of corn. The trial e is located on a field of north Levan and adjust jacent to the highway on the west side. I am sure that if you are interested as you ride by this summer, you will be able to see some differences in the field. The trial is set up with one variety of corn as a tester and all the other varieties being tested against it. As you ride by the field this summer you will undoubtedly notice that there will be differences in the height of the corn. We started the trial on the south side of the field and used more than half of the field getting the various varieties planted, alternating two rows of each variety with the tester variety. We hope to be able to give you some good information from the trial. We hope we can continue corn trials for a period of several years so that we can see which varieties consistently do the best. six-acr- to 50 percent of normal in most of the state. He went on to say that people are continually hoping that this emergency will pass over and they wont have to do anything about it. The fact is that the potential for getting sufficient moisture to alleviate the drought situation has completely passed. People must plan on having to cope with a severe lack of water by late July and August in most of the state. In view of the situation described by Richardson, I think it is imperative that the people of this area consider moisture conservation practices. One area in which I think a great saving could be made is in the watering of gardens. I am convinced that a lot of water is lost in our present system of ditch and furrow irrigation. I believe that there are now reasonably priced systems that could water a garden with less than half the water that is now being used. I have a little flyer showing a tion system drip-trickl- e irriga- that would bring about a great savings in water. It would be hooked right onto the culinary system and would take very little water to water a garden. If any of you are interested in taking a look at this information, I will have it in the office and would encourage you to stop in and take a look at it. Along the same line, some of you undoubtedly saw an article I again remind the people of in the home section of the Salt Levan and the other portions Lake Tribune two or three e irriof the county as well of the hy- weeks ago on for This article datid clinic scheduled for gation gardens. If any of you are concerned about this problem, however, and have dogs that have been in contact with sheep or that have fed on sheep viscera, you may want to attend the clinic. It is not limited to the people in Levan. drip-trickl- drip-trickl- dicated that a kit was available for about $12 which would provide watering for about 1200 feet of garden row. For those of you who do not understand who these systems work, they involve running water lines next to your garden rows or in your orchards. The lines have small openings which permit the water to come out and soak into the ground slowly. You soak the root area of the particular plants you want to water. The systems can be used to water rows in a garden, to water individually spaced Annual Teen Council elections to be held tonite 4-- H The annual Teen Council election and officers training course will be held tonight in the Nephi Elementary School starting at 8 p.m. Nominees for the teen council are mayor, Todd Day and Kevin Fowkes; Mayorette, Carla Sherwood and Gwyn Jolley; secretary, Clara Munk and Brenda Snow; reporter, Karen Morgan and Merilyn Dailey; song leader, Jana Anderson and Denise Wankier; Chief of police, Tom Taylor and Lynn Worwood; program committee, Janice Stuart and Jill Sperry; 4-- trees or shrubs, or designed to meet just about any need you would have for it. With this off and system there is not run would there if managed right deeper be no water soaking than needed. You would not be running water off onto your neighbor or down the street. By combining this system with mulching or covering with black plastic, even greater water savings can be achieved. I would really encourage property owners with a small garden to consider this system of irrigation. may feature photography Arlow Richardson, climatologist with the State Department of Agriculture and a member of the Utah State University drought committee, stated that without providential intervention, the chances are virtually nil of getting sufficient moisture during the summer time to bring the moisture level up to normal. In fact, he said the chances are small that the moisture will come up NEPHI WEATHER The Juab County Extension Service has announced that a photography class is being organized. 4-- A professional photographer has offered to be a leader for the project and, according to Blaine Jones of the Extension Service, some outstanding project books are available.
