It burned and charred the beautiful mountains to the east of the little town. The townspeople were heartbroken to see the mountains they loves so much engulfed in flames. How unbelievable, they thought! Majestic pines and proud oaks, hundreds of years old destroyed in a matter of hours. The cause of such a diaster? The town garbage dump! The people were outraged and How could we be so thoughtless? Why was the garbage dump ever built so close to our beautiful mountains in the first place? And why did we even think of allowing such an eyesore so close to so much beauty? Eventually, a new garbage plant was constructed in the low lying sage brush hills west of the town. But the scars that the old garbage pile left behind still even to this day. remain Does history repeat itself? Last Saturday, as I stared in dismay at Mt. Nebo from the vantage of my home in Mona, I couldnt help but ask myself the same questions that the people of Kamas, Utah did on that day more than 17 years ago.
