Show Worried about feeding that haylage? Blaine Jones, USU Extension Agent for Juab County reports that following damaging frosts, many acres of small grains have been harvested for hay, silage, or haylage in order to salvage some value from the crop. Many questions have been asked as to the value of such feeds, and what problems might be encountered in feeding these crops. Drs. Melvin J. Anderson and George E. Stoddard, dairy scientists at USU, have given suggestions on feeding the frosted grain. They say that if the grain was in the boot stage when it was frosted, it could well be s worth up to about the value of good alfalfa hay as a cattle feed. This value will vary depending on the growth stage and the way the hay was put up, but it should make good feed if it was taken care of immediately while still green, succulent, and is fed in combination with other feeds. They suggest feeding the hay to dairy cattle along with good quality alfalfa and corn silage at rates not to exceed ot the total forage of the ration. The frosted grain is lower in protein content than alfalfa but is equal to or higher in protein than corn silage-compa-rable to grass cut in the stage. Persons who have concern about the adequacy of rations they plan on feeding to their animals may send samples of the rations to Dr. Anderson at USU to be analyzed and computer formulated. Information on submitting the samples may be obtained front the local extension office. Some people are concerned about the possibility of nitrate poisoning from feeding the frosted grain. The dairy scientists say that this is a possibility if the grain was grown on land that has been heavily fertilized with nitrogen. They indicated, however, that small grains usually do not present serious problems in nitrate accumulation unless very heavy applications of nitrogen have been put on. Even then, if the grain is diluted with other feeds as recommended, there should be no problem of nitrate poisoning. It's that time again Build yourself a new J set . . Stoddard said, If there is any concern about the nitrates, it would be well to have both the alfalfa nad the frosted grain if you look closely. Lignification that occurs in the cell walls of the stems and leaves as the frosted grain is left standing reduces digestability, palatability, and the protein and vitamin A content of the grain.
