Its been warrant of nice to have a little rain fall in the valley during the past several days, although at times during the Stampede, the threatening skies made it appear sorta dangerous to have bleacher or tickets. Were glad to have it rain . . they tell me that in some areas of the county it has been so blamed hot and dry in recent weeks that the trees have been going to the dogs! In custody is Jerry Bray, 23, Springville, formerly of Los Angeles. of The majority of merchandise taken from the store has been recovered and is being held as evidence. The merchandise included a stereo, guns, a calculator, and knives. Sheriff Sperry said that a sleeping bag, and some knives were not recovered. Items will be returned to following the trail and release of the evidence by the judge in the case. this week. An ample application of chlorine, probably a few gas masks and some efficient work prevented a more serious situation from developing. above-the-chut- reg They tell me that we missed half a dozen names which we should have remembered in REGularly speaking a couple of weeks ago. In 1968 Susan Greenwood (now Cowan) served as Stampede Queen with Mary McCune and Kay Painter as attendants. In the same year, Mary Ellen Gustin was Miss Nephi with Gay Andreasen and Debbie Park as attendants. If someone has a complete list since the Stampede began, wed sure like to have access to it for our files. Thanks! reg Couple of weeks ago, while going through some Ute Stampede programs, we ran across one which had jokes and some of them a little on the touchy side placed on most pages, between the advertisements. My memory must be getting a little on the failing side, because I surely couldnt remember ever doing this ... but no one else could have. Anyway, heres one of the bad jokes. As the country dog was heading for a new life in the city, he remarked: I hope they keep me well posted." reg Now that it's all over, the public should know that city crews worked like crazy to repair a break in the sewer line near fourth north and third west. Flooding from the high water of some weeks ago caused weakening of the ground around the sewer line across the big hollow and thereby caused a break in the line, spilling a portion of the sewage. A line, equipped with a pump was quickly installed, the mam line repaired and reinforced, and the case closed sign posted, although the road was still closed by-pa- Heres one for you to think about until next week . . . BNMS! BNMS! If we can come up with a prize or two for the first ones coming up with an answer for what the BNMS stands for, well discuss it fully next issue. In the meantime, give it some thought!! reg If youre dragging the back streets instead of dragging main, please be a little careful, particularly at those few blind intersections around town; and also in areas where sewer and water line construction is going on with trenches open (and clearly signed) and in areas where trenches have been covered and a windrow of dirt remains. Speaking of blind intersections, it surely would be accomodating to those driving the field lanes to have yield signs placed on the least-use- d east-weroads as they intersect with (1) the main north-sout- h county lane from the north side of the airport to the Pace farm; and (2) with the north-soutlane about fourth west southwest of Nephi. Might be a few dollars outlay, but it is feasible (and very much so) that a serious accident could be prevented, especially in areas where the traffic coming from either direction is not visible to the driver coming from either direction . . perhaps this does not make sense, but drive the lanes a couple of times and were sure youll see the wisdom of the suggestion. st h . Some weeks ago we heard that our good friend Jay Harris, brother of Stella H. Boswell of Nephi, had been called and sustained as stake patriarch in his stake in Northern California. Our most hearty congratulations to Patriarch Jay on this new calling. He had previously served as bishop of a ward and, we believe, on the stake high council. In his spare time he operates the Harris Construction Co., building those massive California freeways ! Residents of East Juab County are to participate in Pioneer Day observances in two communities. In Mona, the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers invite all to attend various events, and in Levan, Bishop Heber C. Taylor and other ward officers invite residents to join in the State to install semaphore at junction invited 132-9- 1 various activities. A soap box derbv will be the feature for 3:30 p.m., to be followed at 4:30 p.m. by a bathing beauty contest. Girls under 12 years of age will compete for prizes. Installation of a traffic control semaphore at the intersection of US 91 and State Road 132 (First North and Main) in Nephi will proceed as soon as design can be completed and material received, according to information received this week by Mayor Elden c. Sherwood. Edwin E. Lovelace, District Engineer, has advised Mayor Sherw-oothat a recent traffic study clearly indicates the need for the signal. Mayor Sherwood stated, that in discussing the need for a signal at this extremely busy intersection, it was pointed out that a traffic accuated signal In other would probably serve best. words he said, the signal will remain traffic unless the green on north-sout- h cycle is actuated by either a vehicle or a pedestrian waiting to cross the highway. Misses Carter, Nebeker, win parade prizes Ute Stampede parade winners have been listed by the Nephi Jayces, sponsors of the parade on Friday; and the Lions Club, sponsors of the Bathing Beauty parade: First prize went to the float sponsored by the Nephi Lions Club featuring Miss Julia Nebeker of Nephi, Miss Utah. Levan Activities Nephi's water supply is adequate. Mayor says Culinary water in Nephi appears to be more than adequate according to Mayor Elden C. Sherwood. Even in spite of increased usage brought on by the June and early July dry weather, there has been an overflow from the tanks most nights Mayor Sherw'ood said. Loss which had occured from the old concrete tank in the canyon has been eliminated by the construction of the two new tanks, one east of Nephi and one northeast. Water saving has been sufficient that the pumps have not been turned on to put underground water into the system, and inasmuch as flow from Bradley springs in the canyon normally increases in July, it is unlikely that the Nephi, Levan weather NEPHI WEATHER County Hospital now has a radio system, thanks to a grant from the Intermountain Regional Medical Programs Emergency Medical Services. The base station radio was installed at the hospital towards the last of June, and according to Lionel L. Drage, Utah EMS radio system coordinator, "The two-wa(will) enable ambulance personnell to communicate with, hospital emergency physicians. This means the doctor can . (his) skills to emergency sites. extend He can advise ambulance technicians on what to do for accident victims and he can be kept abreast of their condition while they are enroute to the hospital. The radio system is a part of a state-wid- e system designed to let ambulance drivers communicate with every hospital in the state. All ambulances and hospitals in the state will have a single radio frequency to use even if an ambulance is out of the area in which it normally operates. This will greatly assist an ambulance from a rural area which has to transport an accident victim to one of the state's larger hospitals for special treatment. The ambulance will be able to communicate with each hospital it passes the way in case something along unexpected arises. According to Drage, the communications system will allow the ambulance driver to keep in touch with the Utah Highway Patrol as well. The communications system was installed by members of the 130th Electronic Installation Squadron, Utah Air National Guard. The Lions club holds business meeting at City Park Lions Club members attended a breakfast meeting on July 12, to make on Stampede activities final check-up- s under the clubs sponsorship. The breakfast was held at the park. Duane Sperry, chairman of the chuck wagon breakfast, and Frank Booth, chairman of the bathing beauty parade reported on assignments for these events. President Rex Hill stated that the next meeting of the club will be on July 26 at Bear Canyon. Approximately 45 second feet of water is being placed in the Nephi Irrigation Company system to aid irrigation supplies, from the seven wells in the valley, stated J. E. Worthington, president of the company. Wells are producing 44.5 second feet and have been pumped for about two weeks, Mr. Worthington stated, when the canyon discharge lowered.
