Show r Utah Foundation cites The migration trends The 1970 resident census data for the respective states indi- cate that Utah has lost nearly 80,000 persons through interstate migration. This was reported by Utah Foundation, the private research organization, in their latest analysis of population migration trends. The Foundation study points out that reports from the 1970 Census of Population show that there were 336,976 persons born in Utah who were living in other states, while there were 257,218 residents of Utah who had been born in other states. The difference of 79,758 represents Utahs net loss from interstate migration. Although Utahs total loss resulting from interstate movement has been substantial, the losses were confined to a relatively small number of states. Actually Utah experienced a net gain from 36 states and a net loss to only 13 states. Most of the gains however, were small in comparison to the larger losses to a few states. As expected, Utahs biggest loss has been to California. There were 136,145 persons born in Utah who were living in California and only 34,603 natives of California who were residing in Utah, leaving Utah with a net loss of 101,542 persons to California. The Foundation study shows that Utahs largest net population gains from interstate movement came at he expense of Idaho (12,303) and Wyoming (5,358). Utah lost population to the Pacific States and the South Atlantic States, but recorded small gains from the other seven sections of the nation. Foundation analysts also point out that an examination of Census data appears to substantiate the conclusion that many Utahns leave the state after completing their educational training in Utah schools and colleges. Only 20 percent of the persons under 20 who were born in Utah are living in some other state. On the other hand, more than 41 percent of the persons born in Utah who are 25 years of age and older are residing in some other state. Despite the migration patterns, Utahs population consists of a much larger percentage of natives than any of the other Western States. More than 69 percent of Utahs population were born in the state. Throughout the Western States, only 45 percent of the population are natives of their state of residency. In Arizona, for example, 34.2 percent of the resident population were born in the state, and in Nevada the percentage is only 22.6 percent.
