Show ttaivereal Microfilming Core, B ox 26C3 Snlt Sterling Scholar Program to Begin Juab i High School announced this week a Solid Vasfe Unit Seen as Possibility The fires at the Nephi City garbage dump may burn no more if a recent application made to the Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA) goes well. The application, for funds to make a feasibility study of disposing of city waste arid garbage in a sanitary land fill, was recently made by the Six County Commissioners Organization, of which Juab County is a part. As this is the last year that grants will be provided for planning, and competition for the grants will be very stiff, Six County officials feel that getting the grant depends very much on the application. According to the officials, there are two main objectives of the application: (l)To sell the EPA on the critical need the Six County area has for a solid waste management program, and (2) to sell the EPA on the fact that the entire Six County Area firmly supports this program, and that the approach to carrying out this program is unique and is worthy of their investment. Acording to Lee Harlan, land use planner for the Six County organization, We have an excellent chance of being the first multi county organization in the State of Utah to participate in a solid waste management program. All application for grants will be reviewed toward the end of December and the recipients of these grants can receive their money in January of 1973. According to Six County officials, the area could have a working solid waste management program by the end of this coming year if the application's approved. Citizens having questions about the; proposed program may write the Six County organization at: PO Box 26, Federal Building, Richfield, Utah 84701. - In the tradition of half a century, children of employees of Gates Rubber Companys Nephi division were guests at the Gates Christmas party Saturday afternoon at the Juab High School auditorium. The hall was nearly filled to capacity as the children enjoyed a clever program, and then joined with Santa Claus in singing fast-movin- g, Christmas favorites. For many years following its beginning in 1922, Mrs. Charles C. Gates, Sr., personally supervised the Christmas parties, traveling to New York to purchase special gifts, and presiding at the party. Mrs. Gates was wife to the founder of Gates Rubber Company, and her death just a few weeks ago ended a life of thoughtfulness. During the program, C. C. Albertson, works manager of the Nephi Division, gave a brief history of the Gates Childrens Christmas party, and also paid tribute to the late Mrs. Gates. Gifts were distributed to family groups following the program. Approximately 275 gifts were distributed to children of Nephi Division employees, and according to chairman of the Nephi Divisions party committee, values of the gifts averaged $6.00 to $7.00.
