Plans call for clearing and leveling of a large area of land, pouring of concrete slabs, construction of rest rooms, piping well to the water from the already-in-servithe camp ground area, construction of single and double parking and camping areas with fireplaces, etc., group picnic sites, an electrical system, etc. A 10,000 water tank will service the areas camping facilities and water fountains. Mrs. Cary Peterson, president of the Nephi clubs council gave a report of the club projects and of the past accomplishments Mrs. Max Orme, first year. vice president of the district, and Mrs. Blanche Pexton, Fine Aras Committee chairman, also participated in the convention. Activities and accomplishments of the seven womens federated clubs In the Nephi area were recently reviewed by Mrs. Cary Peterson, president of the council. Marilyn S towell n, Mona Youth Recognized LOGAN Thomas Jay Young, Mona, has been chosen to receive this year's Utah Power & Light Company research fellowship in irrigation engineering, Utah State University officials have announced. Mr. Young, a senior majoring in agricultural engineering at USU, will be sponsored in a masters degree program to study irrigational engineering on the $4,000 stipend. Plans call for Mr. Young to be employed by UP&L this summer before starting the pump Irrigation potential of some of Utahs water basins, saicfBr. The Utah utility company began the annual funding program to USU in 1967. The grant provides for a graduate student to study broad areas of water conservation, crop growth, and water application on various types of soils and locales. ' by Ranger Harold E. Laird With the advant of spring weather, travel in the canyon is increasing daily. It is very noticeable the change in the amount of traffic each week1 end going up Salt Creek canyon. This week, Forest Ser-- ! vice crews were busy getting the Ponderosa campgrounds ready for summer use. The cable which has been blocking the road just above the cattle guard has now been moved up to Bear Canyon. The garbage cans have been set out in Ponderosa area and all the broken limbs which were in the area have been cleaned up and removed. Considerable time and effort is expended each year to make the campground as nice as possible for the ensuing summer months. This is the time of year when all the cans litter limbs etc., which had not been seen because of the tall grass, show up very readily. This material is cleaned up and the area Is polished up for the coming months. Another item which receives continual emphasis is the water system. The water system in the Ponderosa campground, for instance, will be flushed out with a sterilant several times before the water is ever allowed to collect tor visitors use. At least twice each month throughout the summer water samples are taken and sent to Volume 60, Number 18 this week to Silver Beaver Award to those Scouters In the Council that have done an outstanding job over a period of several years. This year nearly 1200 were in attendance. Approximately 20 individuals from Juab District were in attendance to witness D. Glen Belllston of Nephi honored on Thursday evening as he received the Silver Beaver award, one of 17 given. The citation which came with the award to Scouter Belllston read In part: Glen is by all measurements a boys man. He is genuinely Interested in their welfare, and never too busy to share their problems. An avid sportsman, he knows the value of outdoor training and both his Scouts and Explorers have enjoyed a full camping proHe attended Philmont gram. in order that he might keep of the Scout program and wisely used the teachniques that he acquired to enrich Scouting not only tor the boys in his unit, but the District as well. At the present time he Is serving as District Commissioner and doing a commendable job. He is never too busy to boost Scouting, and the lives of countless young men have been enriched because of him and the things for which he stands. Prior to this time, Mr. has received the following Scouting awards: Eagle Scout, Silver Explorer, Scout-er- s Key, Spanish Trail award, Flfty-Mile- r, and the Second Milar award. He is a member of the Order of the Arrow, a national camping fraternity, and in 1962 was a four states representative to go to Philmont-Scou- t Ranch to receive special training In the Elxplorer program. His activities have Included scout master, explorer advisor, district committeeman, council executive board member, and district commissioner. Funeral Held for Mrs. Croff, Mother of Two Nephi Ladies Funeral services were held Wednesday at Spanish Fork for Lavina Irene Carter Cross, 82, mother of Mrs. Douglas (Mildred) Brown and Mrs. John V. (Maine) Garrett, both of Nephi. Mrs. Croff died April 26 at the Payson hospital of natural causes. In addition to Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Garrett of Nephi, other survivors include Mrs. Frank (Iola) Sperry, Payson; Mrs. Owen (Fern) Horton, Goshen; Mrs. Cyril (Genevieve) Jex, Mrs. Don (Dorothy) Gled-hil- l, both of Spanish Fork; Mrs. Ray (Geraldean) Hiatt, Pleasant Grove and Mrs. Phyllip (LaJune) American Olsen, 50 Fork; 27 grandchildren; great grandchildren; a brother and. sifter;. Davis of 597 East First North, Nephi, Utah was assigned as a tank crewman with the first infantry division in Vietnam recently. The water on the Ponderosa area will be turned on as soon as weather permits this spring. The cable which has now been installed at Bear Canyon will remain intact until the ground firms up and all the snow bank areas melt. Considerable damage results if use is allowed in campground areas when the ground is extremely soft. Spring is a beautiful time of the year In the canyons, as the leaves are just starting to come out and the grass is just starting to grow.
