I of years ago nature a proving ground for trucks that man can never duplicate. Today it is known as the Baja (bah' hah) California Peninsula, Mexico. These pictures give you only a bare idea of the place. The road is fine for 140 miles below the U.S. border. Then the beating d begins. Rocks and ruts bang, jab and jerk the trucks from stem to stern. Loose sand makes them struggle and strain. Dust chokes them. Heat roasts them. Rivers drench them. The Baja Run took this Chevrolet truck caravan 17 days to go All the tr ucks performed magnifi- cently. Not one was forced to drop out because of mechanical difficulty. I do not remember the event, but I must have been there. 1 do remember ai a boy going out into the wheat fields to shock wheat and having dinner in a sod house. This aod house was In Franklin, Nebraska. The year was 1912. The walls of this sod bouse must have been about two feet thick, plastered over. The roof was of more modern materials. The family had a pleasant frame house, but used the sod house in summer for cooking and eating. It must have been cooler. In the '80s, father was trying to make enough to buy "railroad land. Mother felt the land to be cruel. The trees were too imall to supply even a whip for driving the horses. Prairie fires were frequent, and a fire strip was plowed about the place to break the fire from the home place. As I recall the years, they were a mixture of romance and cruelty, hoopla and agitation. The aod house, however, reminds me to keep down to earth. 1 nrinn ULJLJLJ THE FIR OR PINE TREE lough am ffi Ghowolet IpbbIis bpb hero! ...THE OSES Main Boyd Park, Manager Halley's n, In PARK CONOCO the State attend Mrs. John D.
