Ruth Owen, as congressman from 'the east coast of Florida, has dis cussed the tariff a bit since her ar ' rival in Washington. She discusses it with the hard sense which is com- monly though perhaps erroneously "masculine." This shows . particularly when she addresses ,her- -. self to the problem which is pre-nby the annexation of Porto Rico to the united States. The most interesting thing about them, though, is that they most happily do not bore the town by pretending that there is any special "feminine" point of view about Hie mass of public questions. They discus those Questions Just exactly as an able male man might discuss them. That is, they discuss them humanly. Congresswemea Put ' Stress On Their Value as "Women. In truth, however, and most fortunately, that same remark can be made about most of our lady Nancy As tor, In the British house of commons, puts a lot of stress on the value of "a woman" in British public life. Our lady put virtually no stress on their value as "women" They seem to side with Mrs. P. Scott PlUgerald, who once engagingly remarked that "womanhood is not a nobility; it's a condition." Our lady congresswomen seem to regard it as a condition of humanness, along with the human-neof men, and they are quite content to stand ot fall on their merits as human feelngs. They accordingly made no distinctions between themselves and men in their search for assignments on the committees of the bouse of representatives. Congresswoman Edith Nourse Rogers, of Massachusetts, for instance. Is an Invaluable member of the committee on legislation for veterans. Congresswoman Florence Kahn of California has so deep an Interest in the army that she has become an active member ot the committee on military affair. Congresswoman Ruth Bryan Owed la much mentioned for a place on foreign affairs. Congresswoman - at - large Rath Hanna McCormick is rumored to be destined for a place on the commit tee on navai aiiairs. ' Gridiron Clofc Dinners Still . Bar Feminine Congressmen. One precedent, however, these women do not seem to be able to break. The distinguished newspaper organization called the Or Id Iron ciub has a member who formed the determination to invited lady congressman as his guest to the next arid-iro- n club dinner. The club was thrown Into a horrid and protracted turmoil, pi split into three fragments: One In favor of allowing no woman ever to come Into a Gridiron club dinner; one in favor of making an exception on behalf of the particular lady congressman in question, and one In favor of opening the doors wide to any lady guests whom any member might wish to Invite. The controversy rose to the heights of historical antiquarian research. An ancient research. An ancient reso lution, one long ago passed by the club was discovered. That resolution explicitly forbade the presence of any person of the female sex at the ceremonies and festivities of the Gridiron club. The ax fell upon the project of the club's feminist member. His invitation to the lady congressman was countermanded, ruled out. condemned and prohibited. Thus, a male politician can see a Gridiron show, but a female politician cannot. That is probably a good thing. The speeches of the male politicians in the course of the show will probably sound much better If they are not followed by a speech from Ruth Bryan Owen, for Instance, who has truly inherited her father's voice and can make a whisper thrill you at a distance of a hundred yards. ss : r- J i v Supreme Among All Tours Nearly 1 7,000 nautical mile, visiting 20 porta and cities in 11 countries on the 2ND ANNUAL TOUR of LASSCO'S palatial liner, "City of os yingelet "to CENTRAL and SOUTH AMERICA WORLD trawler, by say, for the cream of all travel ex- - perience, go to Latin America!
