While I do not take particular umbrage at anything specifically Mr. Redd writes, I humbly do not agree with his conclusions and positions. In general it is apparently the position of some in Utah that public lands should be open to any economic development, timber interests, mining interests, recreational pursuits or other development that would benefit those living in Utah. Fortunately, public lands are just that, public. Federal land in Utah, Texas, New Mexico, Washington and all 50 states are PUBLIC LANDS, held for the use and benefits of all Americans. We have too long allowed business interests to unfairly influence public policy concerning use of public lands, especially during Republican administrations and control of Congress. How unfortunate! Public lands belong to us all and must be aggressively protected for both Mr. Redds and my children and grandchildren. We cannot afford to be short sighted in land use issues and trade local economic and big business interests into further degrading wilderness and unexploited lands. I am sure that Utah needs the revenue from coal mining and timber cutting. And, if the people of Utah owned those public lands then it could be used as the owners wished. But all of us own these lands and should have a voice. Am I satisfied in how that voiceposition is effectuated by our president, Congress and federal agencies? Absolutely not! But we must tolerate differences of opinion and seek a middle ground that we can all live with. As a twenty year visitor and lover of your state I know that Utah is home to the most spectacular deserts, canyons, mesas and mountains in this country. At this holiday I am thankful for what is yours in Utah and it is my prayer that it will be protected for all of us now and for generations to come. I find it prudent that when something "new" is being "pushed" that the concerned (I hope you are) parties educate themselves. I've been doing that and have formed my personal opinion. It would be a great mistake to feed anyone, especially our growing children, a food that has shown to possibly be a mutagen (cancer forming), with less nutritional value, is politically motivated, and to add insult - is more expensive. Under the guise of safer food the corporations who had a no-g- o trying to sell it in grocery stores, want to pawn it off on the unsuspecting. Parents, teachers, and students legally do not have to be notified that their school lunch program is using irradiated food. It doesn't have to be labeled for public consumption - at schools or at restaurants. The school boards do know however because they vote on the issue. I urge everyone, including our school board members, to educate themselves on this issue (Im sure the Surebeam corporation would not want you to). A great spot for more information is www.safelunch.org. Download and (PLEASE) read the organizing kit, it has the history and politics, and the history of the politics plus the noted studies that, contrary to the pushers, have footnotes. If you would like to enhance your critical thinking skills, please read 'Trust Us We're The Experts by Sheldon Ramton and John Stauber. You'll never read a corporate advertisement and certainly not a TV ad the same. Every state is dealing with this differently. Many schools have even banned it, never allowing it to come to vote again. The state of Utah decided that each school district could choose themselves. Get involved! If the San Juan district decides to buy irradiated hamburger I feel very sorry for our community and the children who will then become guinea pigs. Scott Mitchell Monticello 26-2- 7 Thant.
