Show November 5. 2003 THE SAN JUAN RECORD - Rie The Buckaroo volleyball team finished the year with a strong performance at the 2A state volleyball tournament. Courtesy photo (l-- r) Casen Eldredge (21) rounds the bend with an escort led by Zac Lady Bucks win two, lose two to finish seventh After finishing the regular season seated third in Region 13, the Lady Buckaroo volleyball team participated in the state tournament on October 30 and 31 at Utah Valley State College in Orem. The first round pitted the Lady Bucks against the third 2A place seed from Region 14, the North Summit Lady Braves. Monticello struggled with serves in the first game of the match and lost the game 25 to 22. The second game was won by great serving on the Lady Buck squad. Raevan Church and Stevie Young led the Bucks in serving to wind up with a 25-- 8 win. The third game was another hard fought match with the The Lady Bucks losing fourth game was won by the Lady Bucks The fifth and deciding game of the match was a great contest. The Lady Bucks showed strong defensive play by Jennifer Garcia and Kelly Ramsay as they picked up numerous hits by the Lady Braves during the match. Sophomore Katie Andrews rotated in on the net, and setters Natalie seniors, Lindy Young and Young and Raevan Church worked hard on coverage. Natalie added Sophomore Whitney Christen- sen also saw some playing time. The Lady Bucks won the Jennifer Garcia game 20-1led the Lady Bucks in hitting with 14 kills. Lindy Young marked up 11 kills during the match. Raevan Church and Natalie Young each turned in 12 assists. With a first round win, the Lady Bucks went up against the future state champs, the San Juan Broncos, in the next 8. match. The Lady Bucks struggled to defend against the hard hitting Bronco squad. San Juan won the matches 25-2Even after the loss, the Lady Bucks still had a chance of placing at the tournament with a good showing during the Friday matches. Up next were the North Sevier Wolves. The Lady Bucks swept ,the match with and 5 wins. The Lady Bucks showed strong team play during the match. The team was led by 25-1- 25-1- 3, 25-1- 7, 25-1- 4. 4, 25-1- 1 8, Natalie Young. Lindy had nine kills in the game, while assists. 15 Bucks advance with Stevie Young and Katie Andrews each had three blocks on the net. Jennifer Garcia, Stevie, and Katie added other 15 an- kills during the match. Kelly Ramsay played a strong back row, while Raevan Church racked up eight assists. The win ad- vanced the Lady Bucks into the placing round of the tournament. The final game of the state tournament for the Lady Bucks was against the South Summit Wildcats. The Wildcats were ranked first in Reregion gion 14 play with a record and are a strong team. Although the Lady Bucks had defeated the South Summit team earlier in the season, history would not repeat itself at the state tournament. The Wildcats won the match and with wins of 9-- 1 all-arou- 25-1- 2, 25-1- 5, The Lady Bucks played strong defensively against the 25-- 9. Wildcats, but never quite found their rhythm offensively during the match. The loss gave the Lady Bucks a 7th place finish in the state tour- nament. Next season should prove to be exciting for the young Lady Bucks volleyball team. by Scott Boyle Coming off the best week of practice this year, the Monticello Bucks began their march to the 1A state football crown with a statement-making performance over the . Whitehorse Raiders, Monticello had their way with 51-0- the Raiders, running to a 30-first quarter lead, which they extending to 44-- 0 at halftime. Buckaroo Coach Mike Bowring was pleased with the response of his players, who came out ready to play from the opening kickoff. Shadd Christensen scored two touchdowns in the first quarter, on runs of 15 and 20 yards. Casen Eldredge also added two touchdown runs, of five and 43 yards. The Buck offense was brutal, rushing for 245 yards, including 74 yards on four rushes by Christensen, 72 yards on three rushes by Casen Eldredge, six rushes for 57 yards by Wade Eldredge, six for 16 yards by Snyder, and 15 yards on three rushes by Hawkins. Hawkins also contributed 94 yards on three punt returns. Torres and backup Reed Anderson had a perfect day in the air, with Torres three for three for 57 yards and a touchdown and Anderson two for two. Bowring was pleased with the effort, execution, and enthusiasm of his players. We stayed crisp, he said. The Bucks connected on all extra point kicks (six by Antonio Mustache and one by Zach Allred) for the first time. The Bucks are excited for the next semifinal test, against the surging Duchesne Eagles, 20 to 7 winners over a tough Parowan team and winner of four straight. Monticello hopes to avoid a repeat of the semifinal upset last year to Enterprise. Its do or die now, says an animated Bowring, I like our chances. Monticello defeated Duchesne 32-1- 2 in September. They should be confident, but not too confident. Logan Despain, called one of the best running backs in the state earlier in the season, showed why against Parowan two weeks ago by running for 281 yards (a state high for the year) and three touchdowns and 162 yards on 20 carries and two more touchdowns in the rematch last Saturday. Combine him with a speedy quarterback and Duchesne has big play ability. Game time is 11 am on Saturday at Carbon High School 9 |
