Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday DARE . 4 Itiatikiyou for your tPatience graduates 55 at Monticello Elementary The DARE Culmination at Monticello Elementary School drew its largest crowd yet at a May 12 fifth ceremony. Fifty-fiv- e grade students received certificates of competition for their work during the 17 week program. Monticello Chief of Police Kent Adair taught the class one day a week for each of those 17 weeks. The DARE program began in Monticello in 1995. In its first year, it was sponsored by the National Service. Park June 24, 1998 - Page The following year, Adair and Officer Kent Rowley tended a two week training course and have conducted the class since then. MES Principal Tim Taylor thanked Adair and Officer. Kent Rowley for their committed not to use drugs. Each essay is presented in front of the entire class and then four are chosen as the best essays and read during the graduation ceremony. The winners all received plaques and a mini DARE basketball. Special awards were given to students who had worn their DARE shirts to all 17 days of class. Lori Butler, President of the PTA, and Sandra Slade, Elementary School secretary, were given special awards for their help and support of the program as was Chris Adair, elementary music Teacher, for volunteering time to teach the students the DARE song. Joe Barton and Diane Tracy, fifth grade teachers, were also given a special award for their support of the program and rearranging their schedules to make class time available for Chief Adair. Principal Taylor was presented the flag with the signatures of all the students participating in the DARE class, which will be put on display at the school. Chief Adair spoke about commitment and dedication to the program. I want them to know how much I appreciate their efforts. The tremendous program and why they are relationship they develop with the children is a very positive part of the program. The children learn to see the police as their friends and someone they can go to for help. I hope you all will stay drug free. plans quilt raffle m The Dinosaur Museum in Blanding is raffling a beautiful denim quilt by premier quilter Barbara Harris. Barbara, a Blanding resident, has been ing her hand made quilts at the museum for four years. show- . Her quilts are so exceptional that the museum had special quilt spaces made to show her work in the gift shop. Barbara donated the quilt being raffled to raise funds for the museum. Tickets are being sold for Girls ages the quilt at the museum until the evening of the 4th of July. The drawing for the quilt will be held at 7 pm in To participate in Miss San Juan the gift shop area. The museum is open for longer summer hours, which are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. The extended hours gives extra opportunities to plan family activity schedules.
